How to Request a Refund From DEWA
When you are moving out of Dubai or shifting to a new place, you can request a DEWA deposit refund. When moving in, a customer submits a security deposit for the electricity and water connection. However, consumers must follow the guidelines set by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).
Here is the complete procedure to request a credit amount and a DEWA security deposit refund in Dubai.
Detailed Procedure for DEWA Refund Request
When a customer creates a DEWA account, they need to pay a security deposit. Individuals, Government offices or businesses can request a refund of the outstanding credit amount in the DEWA account.
DEWA has integrated these services with Emirates NBD and Western Union. That said, it allows users to request a DEWA refund and receive it instantly. Let’s learn all the service requirements and processes.

Requirements for DEWA Refund
When requesting the DEWA deposit refund online, the consumer must fulfil the following requirements:
- Move out of the premises where they have the DEWA connection
- Provide an updated email address and contact number
- The credit amount in the account
If the information isn’t updated, users can update it via the DEWA mobile application.
Service Steps
After completing the requirements, customers need to understand DEWA bills and clear the outstanding amount. Users will log in to their DEWA account via the website or mobile application. Now, they will select the DEWA deposit refund options from the following:
Via IBAN
- Attach the IBAN bank proof that mentions the beneficiary’s name
- Enter the verification code received via email or SMS
Consumers will receive a confirmation on their phone screen about the successful submission of the DEWA refund request. Customers will receive the amount in their provided bank account.
Via Western Union
- Select the option where you will receive the verification code
- Fill in the verification code received on the email address or SMS
Customers will receive a notification about the generated Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN). They can show MTCN to any Western Union branch and get the DEWA refund.
Via Customer Care Centre (Through Interactive Voice Response)
DEWA users can also visit the customer care centre if they want a refund. They can choose the IBAN option, Western Union, receive the amount on another active account or cheque option (if the amount exceeds AED 200k).
- Contact the customer care centre via interactive voice response (IVR)
- Verify the account details
- Pay the outstanding amount (if any)
- Receive the confirmation notification
Companies must request a refund by using the letterhead. They must provide valid and updated contact information. Also, they must submit only one IBAN since more than one is not allowed for the same DEWA account deactivation request.

Charges and Service Time
DEWA charges no fees when the customer selects IBAN or another account number. However, for deposit refunds via cheques and Western Union, the following amount will be charged to the customers:
- Cheques: AED 20 + VAT
- Western Union: AED 18.37 or 1% of the total DEWA deposit refund (whichever is higher)
