Effective 30th September 2024, RTA and Dubai Police have increased the maximum speed limit for sections of Al Amardi Street and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street.
The new road speed limit for Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Street has been set to 100 km/h between Dubai Al Ain Road and Academic City Roundabout. Whereas, the speed limit has increased to 90 km/h between Academic City Roundabout and Al Khawaneej Street. Moreover, Al Amardi Street will have a standardised limit of 90 km/h between Al Khawaneej Street and Emirates Road.
These changes have been announced after a comprehensive study aimed at enhancing road safety and improving traffic flow. Both streets have recently seen major development and expansion including new lanes and intersections which increase traffic flow. The changes align with the Dubai Speed Management Manual which aims to balance speed limits, traffic flow and road safety.
New Bridges Opened on Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Khail Road
RTA has opened new major bridges on Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Khail Road. The two new Garn Al Sabkha bridges span a total of 1,265 metres and feature two lanes each. The bridges aim to improve connectivity with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and eliminate traffic overlap by allowing free traffic flow. Set to be completed in October, the project will reduce peak-hour travel time by up to 70%.
On Al Khail Road, RTA inaugurated two additional bridges spanning a total of 1,350 metres. The bridges have a combined capacity of 8,000 vehicles per hour and aim to reduce travel time by 30%. The bridges are located at Zaa’beel and Al Quoz 1 and are part of the ongoing Al Khail Road Development Project.
RTA and Dubai Police Join Hands for Heavy Vehicles Monitoring
As part of the 5-Year Executive Plan for Dubai’s Traffic Safety Strategy, RTA and Dubai Police have unveiled joint patrol units to monitor heavy vehicles on six major roads in the city. These roads include Emirates Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road, Al Maktoum Airport Road and Ras Al Khor Road.
This initiative supports Dubai’s ‘Zero Fatalities’ vision and aims to enhance traffic safety. The patrol units will inspect issues such as overloading, tyre safety and proper maintenance. Fines will also be imposed in case of violations.
Additionally, out of the 16 planned, RTA has already completed 10 truck rest stops across major routes for drivers. Drivers can pray, rest and refuel at these stops. This contributes to improved road safety and reduces accidents.
Vehicle Testing Appointments in Al Qusais and Al Barsha Launches Electronic Booking

Vehicle owners can now schedule vehicle testing appointments via the RTA Dubai app or website. The pre-booking service is available at Tasjeel centres in Al Qusais and Al Barsha. The service covers tests like Renewal, Registration and Export with Number Plates.
Senior citizens and people of determination do not need to pre-book the vehicle test service in Al Qusias and Al Barsha. Other than them, customers who show up without an appointment during the trial phase will be charged AED 100. RTA will monitor the service during the early stages to improve quality and efficiency.
Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport Extends the Registration Deadline
The application deadline for the 4th Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport 2025 has been extended to 20th October 2024. This extension enables more specialised entities and companies to showcase their technological advancements.
The competition, themed ‘Dubai Autonomous Transport Zone’ supports Dubai’s goal to convert 25% of all journeys to self-driving by 2030. The winner of the competition will be announced in September 2025 and will receive a cash prize of USD 3 Million.
SRTA to Launch the First Phase of Electric Buses
Supporting the UAE’s 2050 Climate Neutrality Strategic Initiative, SRTA has launched the first phase of its environmentally friendly electric bus services. In the first phase, 10 electric buses will run on three routes between Dubai, Ajman and Hamriyah. It will also contribute to the authority’s goal of shifting towards sustainable transport and enhancing public transport in Sharjah.
Ras Al Khaimah Enables Advance Booking for Taxi Services for the Hospitality Sector

RAKTA has introduced an advanced taxi booking service for the hospitality sector. Hotel staff can simultaneously request multiple taxis from centralised taxi collection points using this service. Volkswagen Joins Forces with Google to Launch a Smartphone AI Assistant
Volkswagen has partnered up with Alphabet’s Google to develop an AI-powered assistant for drivers through a smartphone app. The AI assistant will help drivers answer car-related questions and help them with tasks like changing a flat tyre. The AI assistant is powered by Google’s Gemini large language model and uses text, images and videos to answer questions. Currently, the AI assistant is only available to Volkswagen’s Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport model owners. However, VW has plans to expand to more vehicles by next year.
Two New Salik Gates Launched in Dubai
Dubai is set to enhance traffic flow with the launch of two new toll gates in Dubai by the end of November. The gates are located at Business Bay Crossing on Al Khail Road and Al Safa South on Sheikh Zayed Road. This will raise the total number of Dubai Salik gates from eight to ten in the emirate.
The Business Bay Crossing road is expected to reduce congestion by 12 to 15% on Al Khail Road. A 10 to 16% reduction will be seen on Al Rabat Street. On the other hand, the Al Safa South gate is expected to reduce the right-turn traffic volume from Sheikh Zayed Road to Meydan Street by 15%.
Additionally, the Al Safa South gate will also improve traffic distribution between Financial Center Street and Meydan Street. Both gates will operate on solar power, aligning with Dubai’s sustainability goals.
