All About RTA’s Upcoming Bus and Taxi Lane Extension Plan
In an attempt to make public transport even more accessible to everyone, RTA Dubai plans to extend the bus and taxi lanes in Dubai. The upcoming project of exclusive bus and taxi lanes in the Emirate is expected to take place between 2023 – 2027. Let’s get into the details.
RTA Plans to Extend Bus and Taxi Lanes in Dubai
The RTA endorsed five-year plan will add eight main streets:
- 2nd December Street
- Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street
- Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Street
- Amman Street
- Al Satwa Road
- Al Nahda Street
- Omar bin Al-Khattab Street
- Naif Street
This will increase the total length of exclusive RTA bus and taxi lanes in Dubai to 48.6 km.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, the director-general and chairman of the RTA Board of Executive Directors, dedicated bus and taxi lanes have proved to be successful globally to encourage individuals to use public transport instead of private vehicles.
He also emphasised on how dedicated bus and taxi lanes have proven successful in regards to reducing travel time in major metropolitan cities in Europe and America and Europe. As a result, there is an increased compliance with on-time bus departures and taxi arrival times.
The upcoming RTA bus and taxi lane extension program will encourage public to use mass transport means, this in turn will also help reduce pollution and traffic congestion.
RTA aims to make public transport easier for users. Staying true to this purpose, RTA Dubai already has a service whereby residents can propose new routes via the RTA App according to their convenience.
Extension in Dubai Bus and Taxi Lanes in Dubai Will Reduce Journey Time
By 2030, the extension of bus and Dubai taxi lanes is expected to contribute to a 30 per cent increase in public transport rides on some streets and will also help minimise the requirements of additional buses because of the journey time saved.
During peak hours, the project is expected to increase the average bus speed and minimise travel time by 40%.
With this project, the bus journey times in the following streets is expected to reduce:
- Journey time on 2nd December Street is expected to reduce by 44%
- Journey time on Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Street and Amman Street is expected to go down by 39%
- Journey time on Omar bin Al-Khattab Street is expected to go down by 28%
- Journey time on Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street is expected to reduce by 27%
- Journey time on Al-Nahda Street is expected to reduce by on 25%
- Journey time on Al Satwa Road is expected to reduce by 18%
Moreover, because of this reduction in time, the satisfaction level of bus and taxi commuters is also expected to increase.
Earlier, RTA completed constructing dedicated bus lanes spanning across 11.6 km. The lanes covered parts of Naif Street, Al Mina Street, Al Ittihad Road, Al Waleed Street, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street, Al Ghubaiba Street, Al Khaleej Street, and Khalid bin Al Waleed Street.
