Car History: Chevrolet Cruze
Embedded in the American culture of powerful cars, Chevrolet has produced some popular sedans and SUVs. Among its current lineup, Chevrolet Cruze is a compact sedan equipped with decent technology and features. During the global economic crisis in 2009, Chevrolet rolled out a new sedan, Cruze, providing modern features at budget-friendly prices.
Chevrolet Cruze history spans two generations in its short journey. Moreover, the sedan became the successor to Chevrolet Optra, Holden Astra and Chevrolet Cobalt.
Let’s go through the journey of the Chevrolet Cruze over the years and see how it became one of the most popular used American sedans in the UAE.
Evolution of the Chevrolet Cruze
Chevrolet, a subsidiary of the renowned automobile manufacturer, General Motors, has produced a fine lineup of luxury and non-luxury vehicle models. Cruze debuted in 2009 and got popular due to its comfortable ride, decent cabin space and good fuel economy.
Chevrolet Cruze history doesn’t date back too long. However, the sedan’s cabin space and latest tech features have always intrigued buyers. Let’s go through the Chevrolet Cruze generations and revisit its history which spans over a decade.
FIRST-GENERATION CHEVROLET CRUZE (2008-2016)
Chevrolet introduced the first generation of Cruze at the Paris Motor Show. Since General Motors acquired Daewoo, it has used the platform to produce sedans and hatchbacks. The Chevy Cruze shared the same platform as Daewoo Lacetti.
The Daewoo Lacetti Premiere model used the nameplate, Cruze. Since the Chevrolet Cruze models were manufactured for different regions, it came with the following engine line-up:
- The 1.4-litre engine paired with 5-speed manual transmission produced 100 horsepower
- 1.4-litre turbocharged engine paired with 6-speed automatic transmission generated 140 hp
- 1.4-litre turbocharged ECO engines with the option of a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission
- A 1.6-litre engine with 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission options generated 124 hp
- The 1.8-litre engine with the same transmission options produced 141 hp
The ECO models used the VVT engines and ultra-low rolling resistance tyres, whereas the RS variant came with 1.4-litre engines with a slightly distinguished appearance.
The front fascia included headlamps housing and the iconic golden bow-tie Chevrolet logo between the grille. A curved roofline extended from the windshield to improve the aerodynamics of the car. Moving onto the rear deck, it was relatively shorter compared to the other sedan models.
The interior represented the traditional Chevy design with a choice of coloured fabric or vinyl panels on each fascia. Additionally, the twin-cockpit layout was similar to the Chevy Corvette model.
Other car body types, such as hatchback and station wagon models complemented the 5-seater sedan model under the Chevrolet Cruze nameplate from 2011.
FACELIFTED CHEVROLET CRUZE (2016-2018)
In 2016, Chevrolet introduced the facelifted Cruze model. The sedan came equipped with the modern safety features and systems. Moreover, the Chevrolet Cruze now featured only a 1.4-litre ECOTEC engine producing 153 hp. Besides, the engine was mated with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.
The compact sedan boasted 15 hp more than the preceding models in the Chevrolet Cruze history. Alongside, the infotainment features included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A telescopic steering wheel, Bluetooth connection, and a 4-speaker audio system were the new technology and entertainment features added to the sedan.
It also came with a rearview camera to ease parking and the MyLink infotainment system. Chevrolet Cruze boasted other technology features as well depending on the trim. These features included the following:
- Heated seats
- Heated steering wheel
- Keyless ignition system
- LED running lamps
- Steering wheel-mounted controls
The four trims available in the Chevrolet Cruze line-up were L, LS, LT, and Premiere. Each trim was distinguished by the additional features. For instance, LS and LT model buyers could opt for the Sports Body package. Additionally, LT and Premiere trims came with leather upholstery.
SECOND-GENERATION CHEVROLET CRUZE (2018- PRESENT)
Chevrolet Cruze’s second generation rolled out in 2018. It came with an improved and aerodynamic design.
The front fascia sported a new broader grille design. The headlights featured LED Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) for the first time in the history of the Chevrolet Cruze.
Alongside this, SiriusXM Satellite radio was available as an option. A keyless entry system and push-start button were added to the Chevrolet Cruze models depending on the trim level. More safety and tech features enhanced the sedan’s appeal making it one of the most popular sedans by Chevrolet.
From 2020 onwards, the Cruze models included the Chevrolet’s teen driver technology. Besides, it came equipped with a 1.4-litre VVT petrol engine producing 153 hp and paired with 6-speed automatic transmission.
