History of Hummers
Size matters when we talk about the automobile industry. The forever-evolving automotive industry has introduced vehicles that are spitting images of class and are distinguishable whenever they grace the roads with their presence. Speaking of distinguished vehicles on road, hummers easily stand out because of their gigantic size and notable features. The hummer history dates back to the twentieth century and the enormous vehicle has come a long way.
Originally manufactured as military vehicles for transporting troops and weapons, their popularity made them available as civilian vehicles too. The hummer history holds significance in the automobile industry. Let’s take a leap back into the past and learn all about the history of the giant vehicles we know as hummers.
Hummer History
Hummers are different from regular vehicles mainly because of their gigantic size and different build. The body structure of hummers is also different from any other vehicle you may come across on the road.
The unmatched off-road capability of these large vehicles makes them highly popular among a select class of people who often go off-roading. But off-roading isn’t the only feature making them famous. Hummers have evolved exponentially with time and the recent ones can give a tough time to any other vehicle.
Hummer Evolution History
Let’s go through the major turn of events in hummer history which are listed below:
THE ORIGINS OF HUMMER
In the mid-1980s, the Pentagon provided a fair amount of money to a heavy vehicle manufacturer, AM General. AM General was tasked with producing a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (Humvee). The Pentagon wanted a military vehicle suitable for different terrains which can accommodate and transport soldiers and cargo.
The AM General’s Humvee was unlike any military jeep and it served the purpose it was built for. The Humvee could travel across side slopes, steer over any 16-inch object below its lowest point. It could also travel conveniently through water banks of up to 5 feet with the genuine fording kit. The traditional jeeps of that time would topple under such conditions but the Humvee overcame them and thousands of the models went into production for the military.
HUMMERS HIT THE ROADS
Hummers were originally designed for military use. The 4-wheel drive gigantic vehicles were a viable travel option for troopers. Hummers became available as civilian vehicles mainly because of Arnold Schwarzenneger, the Austrian-American actor, producer and politician.
In 1990, during the shoot of his movie ‘Kindergarten cop’, the actor fell in love with the vehicle and he went on to persuade the AM General to produce a civilian version of the Humvee.
Two years later, in 1992, Arnold had the vehicle in his garage. The civilian version was called ‘Hummer’ and it became an instant sensation mainly because of the off-roading capabilities and stand-out features. Hummers continued to appear in major movie franchises in the years to come like the ‘Transformers’ franchise. The transformers cars included a Hummer along with many other vehicles.
The civilian version was not much different from the military humvee. Comfort features such as air conditioning, etc were added but other than that there were no major changes in the Hummer. The ideal off-roading vehicle was a treat for drivers but it wasn’t best suited for city driving. It took more space compared to conventional jeeps and the emissions were also large.
RISE AND FALL OF HUMMER
Another major event in Hummer’s history happened in 1999 when General Motors (GM) saw the opportunity of expanding its brand and purchased the rights to produce hummers. Soon after, the truck was renamed H1 and within a few years, GM released another model named H2. The models were highly successful initially but when the sales started to go down, GM launched H3 in 2005. It was a smaller and cheaper version of the Hummer. The new version was a sensation for a couple of years until it wasn’t.
2009 became the last year of Hummer as GM filed for bankruptcy and the Hummer brand, along with Pontiac and Saturn was discontinued. Check out these facts about General Motors to learn more about the brand.
Reasons for Decline
During the bankruptcy, GM discontinued the production of Hummer mainly because of the decreasing sales. Listed below are some of the reasons that may have contributed to the decline of Hummers:
LARGE SIZE
While the size of the Hummer may have been the factor that made it famous in the first place, it also played a part in its decline. When the enormous vehicles hit the streets, they took up a fair amount of space. It wasn’t limited to roads in specific; the large vehicles required extra space in parking lots and garages too.
FUEL CONSUMPTION
As you would expect with a vehicle as enormous as the Hummer, the fuel consumption was very high. Petrol prices in the UAE and around the world have seen changes over the years. When Hummers first appeared in the 1980s, petrol prices were comparatively low but eventually increased with time. Hummers were very thirsty for petrol and it wasn’t easy to fulfill their needs.
EXPENSIVE VEHICLES
The Hummers were expensive as they were not like regular vehicles. The production costs were high and only a select class was able to afford them. Although GM trimmed down the price with H3, it was almost impossible for a single model to sustain the brand.
LARGE EMISSIONS
It’s a no-brainer that a vehicle this big with a high fuel consumption would only produce more emissions. As environmental awareness grew, Hummers were blamed for their excessive emissions. The hummers were tagged as a symbol of automotive excess that the environment could not afford. There are other high fuel consumption reasons you should know about to avoid extra expenses.
BACK WITH A BANG
After years into oblivion, in 2020 GMC announced the Hummer GMC EV, the first fully-electric Hummer. The GMC Hummer EV arrives with the answers to all the questions that were thrown at its predecessors. The all-electric vehicle is comparatively smaller in size and it will have no emissions. The off-roading capabilities that initially made Hummers famous are enhanced in the latest model with more unique features like crabwalk and extract mode to name a few.
This was everything about the hummer history. The unique features of these enormous vehicles such as the massive tyres and race-ready suspension make them an absolute off-roading beast.
While the hummer history may have seen many ups and downs, the latest hummer models can be the answer to all the problems that Hummers previously had.
