What is Four-Wheel Drive (4WD)
Four-Wheel, also called 4X4 or 4WD, is a type of drivetrain capable of delivering torque to all four wheels at the same time. In simpler words, all four wheels are provided with equal amounts of energy to rotate simultaneously. The car contains a typical drivetrain and is heavy in weight due to additional elements on it. Typically, these cars are considered only for off-roading. However, new variations in the drive can be used on streets also.
In this guide, we will explain what does four wheel drive mean and how 4wd works.
What is 4WD
Four-wheel drive vehicles can provide equal amounts of torque to all its tyres simultaneously. A transfer case is present between the rear and front axle to distribute torque, it can also control the amount and timing of torque provision.
This transfer case is connected to an outer shaft or gear transmission which can make it part-time or full-time four wheel drive. These vehicles are often confused with All-Wheel Drive (AWD), but there is a clear difference between AWD and 4WD.
Modes of 4WD Driving
Four wheel drive cars come in different variations in terms of gear transmission. They can be either permanently four wheel drive or can be a partial one depending upon the car model and its usage. See the following types of four-wheel drive that we have enlisted.
Permanent (Full-Time) 4WD
The permanent 4WD is continuously provided with the torque to rotate all wheels. It does not require any additional effort or car transmission for activating both axles. Usually, a power shift is placed between the rear and front axle to control the power distribution and provide maximum traction to the drivers.
Part-Time 4WD
The part-time 4WD provides option of 2 wheel-drive or 4 wheel-drive. The car is equipped with both the systems, and it is upon the driver’s choice to choose between the systems. An additional gear transmission or switch is required to shift from 2WD to 4Wd and vice versa. It comes with a lock between the rear and front axle which makes it suitable for slippery surfaces.
Automatic 4WD
Automatic 4WDs are 2WDs by default but it can transit from 2 to 4 wheel-drive. It contains a latest system that can detract the driving conditions and automatically shift the torque to the wheels. Generally, a slippery road or extreme off-roading are the conditions which transit it from 2 to 4WD.
How it Works
The working of a four-wheel drive is a little complicated on the contrary to other vehicles. It contains additional transmissions, differentials and shafts that enable vehicles to drive at extreme off-roading conditions. The components include in its working are as follows:
- Differentials
- Outer shafts
- Transmission case
- Transfer case
- Axles
Engine
The powertrain system of 4WD works on the basis of petrol or diesel internal combustion engines. It generally uses V8 engines, but electric and hybrid engines are also carving their ways. In this case, we will consider a 5.7l V-8 engine that produces 381 hp and 401 lb-ft torque.
Working
Powerful engine is the most important thing to consider when buying a 4WD. The engine provides power to the transmission case attached with a transfer case through the output shaft. This output shaft contains three differentials (power distributor). These differentials are located at the front axle, rear axle and one in the middle between the transfer case and rear axle. The outer shaft between the middle differential and rear differential is present to rotate front tyres and rear tyres at different speeds. The rotation at different speeds allows vehicles to drive through sharp cuts and uneven places.
Moreover, the transfer case installed controls torque (power) provided to the rear and front axle. It provides torque to the differential and divides it as per the road condition. The additional differentials and different speed or rear and front tyres is to maintain the balance and drivability of vehicles. The whole working of 4Wd is based on Ackermann’s steering geometry, which makes it possible to drive in extreme road conditions.
Electric and Hybrid 4WD
The 4WD cars are known for heavy internal combustion engines which produce heavy sound while driving. However, with time 4WD hybrid and electric cars are also being used in these off-roading giants. This is possible because new hybrid engines are capable of producing enough torque that can support 4WD. Whereas, 4WD electric cars are embedding motors on each axle to create enough energy for rear and front axles to operate in extreme road conditions.
Therefore, electric and hybrid 4Wd vehicles are getting popular in the market.
This was all about the 4WD vehicles that are best for off-roading, however the new one can be used on normal roads also. The inclusion of electric and hybrid engines in four-wheel drive is considered revolutionary and set a new standard for the automobile industry.
