Car History: Honda Pilot
The Honda brand needs no introduction. The Japanese manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles produced various iconic vehicles throughout its 70+ years history. FIRST GENERATION – 2003 TO 2005
Introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, the first generation of Honda Pilot was a three-seater SUV with a capacity of seating 8. The third row was comparably small and made it difficult to accommodate large passengers. However, space was never an issue with the Honda Pilot. The foldable middle and rear seats provided some extra cargo space.
Throughout the first generation, the Honda Pilot was introduced with three engines. Originally, the model was introduced with a 3.5-litre, V6 engine. The 2003 and 2004 models were able to deliver 240 horsepower.
The Honda Pilot history witnessed an engine upgrade in the 2005 models. The engine upgrade increased the horsepower to 255. All Honda Pilot vehicles from 2003 to 2005 came with a variable torque management four-wheel-drive system. The four-wheel-drive system helped to drive in certain gears and low-speed situations. 2006 TO 2008 – FACELIFT
The 2006 models of Honda Pilot came with an option for buyers to choose from a four-wheel-drive or a front-wheel-drive system. The Honda Pilot history also witnessed the retirement of the variable torque management system. Both the new versions came with a 244 horsepower engine.
Every vehicle in the first generation came with a five-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the facelift came with the Honda variable cylinder management system. The advanced system allowed the vehicle to work in a 3 or 4-cylinder mode. The new system accounted for added fuel efficiency and was a good addition to the model.
2009 TO 2011 – SECOND GENERATION
All models in the second generation came with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The 2009 model had a 3.5-litre V6 Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) engine which could deliver 250 horsepower. Additionally, traction control and anti-lock braking system included in all pilot modes ensured safety and handling.
The second generation also included a powered rear tailgate – making loading and unloading in the cargo compartment easier. The second generation was introduced in 4 basic trims, LX, EX, EX – L and touring.
Some trims included premium features such as a power moonroof, tri-zone climate control, and a satellite navigation system. All the features added to enhanced safety and comfort.
2012 TO 2015 – FACELIFT
In 2013, the Honda Pilot history saw the introduction of a rearview camera system in all the models. Bluetooth hands-free calling was also introduced in the models. Some additional safety features included traction control, vehicle stability assist and side-impact airbags.
The 2015 model was introduced in a special trim. The Honda Pilot features in the special edition consisted of a moonroof, a rear-seat infotainment system and satellite radio capability.
2016 TO 2018 – THIRD GENERATION
The third generation changed the history of Honda Pilot in terms of design and features. The overall design became sleekier as compared to the square-shaped earlier models. Additionally, the exterior included daytime running lights and LED headlights. Some models also included 20-inch tyres. The third generation weighed about 316 kilograms less than the preceding generation yet it was larger.
The 3.5-litre V6 engine delivered 280 horsepower – 30 hp more than the previous generations. It was offered in two transmissions – a six-speed automatic transmission on basic trims and a 9-speed automatic transmission on the higher-end trims. Buyers had the option to choose from a front-wheel drive or an all-wheel drive.
Honda Pilot was also introduced in an elite trim with some premium features like LED projector headlights, panoramic sunroof, and rain-sensing wipers among several others. Besides the Elite, other trims included Touring, EX, EX – L and LX.
A multi-angle backup camera was standard on models. Other features included the following:
- Passenger side mirror camera
- Blindspot and rear-cross traffic monitoring
- An optional lane departure warning system
- Adaptive cruise control
- Forward collision warning system
In the 2017 model, both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were added to the built-in infotainment touchscreen.
2019 TO 2022 – FACELIFT
The Honda Pilot history witnessed major adjustments in the 2019 models. Along with the addition of a hands-free tailgate, the taillights and headlights were updated. The interior also received an upgrade to provide more space for passengers and cargo. The 9-speed transmission system and start-stop system, found in the Elite and Touring trims were also revised.
The most significant changes were in the amenities in the interior. HondaSensing lane-keeping assist was available in all models. Additionally, Honda Pilot included CabinTalk, a 4GLTE hotspot, and a unique rear entertainment system.
The 2020 model was introduced in a new Black Edition trim level. Honda Pilot was seen in a black interior and exterior trim along with 20-inch black alloy wheels. An upgraded steering wheel and a captain’s chair in the second row were also noticeable features in the model.
For the 2021 models, 9-speed transmissions were available in all trims. The 2022 models came with better fuel economy and a towing capacity of about 1585 kilograms.
