Car History: Kia Optima
Kia entered into the midsize sedan category by launching Optima, also known as K5. Before the launch of Optima, Kia was focused on producing small-size sedans, hatchbacks and SUVs. Value-oriented pricing, advanced safety features and durability are the core elements of Optima that make it a top-tier car in the mid-size category. That said, Kia has rolled off five generations of this successful model series since its inception in the new millennium.
Let’s dive deep into the Kia Optima’s history and the journey it has covered to top the list.
Kia Optima Generations
Here are complete details regarding different generations of Kia Optima that will elaborate further on the history of Kia Optima.
First Generation Kia Optima (2001 to 2003)
The first-generation Kia Optima features design cues of the bio-design era. At the front, the chromed radiator grille was sandwiched between angular headlights. Fog lights and wide air intakes were present on the lower same coloured bumper. At the rear end, wide rectangular brake lights were present.
The first generation Optima was built on a 106.3-inch wheelbase that provides a roomy cabin for the passengers. The cabin was equipped with leather upholstery and seats and even a sunroof. Moreover, power windows, side airbags, split-folding rear seats and AC were the standard features of this generation.
An optional 2.4-litre inline and 2.7-litre V6 engine could be paired with a standard 5-speed manual transmission system or an optional 4-speed automatic one. To ensure maximum comfort, independent suspensions were installed on every tyre.
First Generation Kia Optima Facelift (2003 to 2006)
Only after three years, the first generation of Optima was facelifted by Kia. In the facelifted version, the front fascia was completely redesigned. Angular headlights were replaced by individually rounded ones, and a new radiator grille with vertical slats and a Kia logo in between was installed.
The cabin was equipped with leather upholstery, a premium stereo system, power locks and power windows.
For the basic trim, Kia offered a 2.0-litre petrol engine, and for top trims, a V6 engine was available.
Second Generation Kia Optima (2006 to 2008)
The second generation was different from other Kia Optima models. It features sweptback headlights that extend from the front to the fenders. A wide radiator grill with vertical slats was also installed at the front. However, no major changes were made at the rear end.
Inside the cabin, the centre stack was occupied by a stereo system and other necessary controls. Whereas a four-dial instrument cluster was present behind the steering wheel.
The engine range offered in this generation includes 2.0, 2.4 and 2.7-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines.
Second Generation Kia Optima Facelift (2008 to 2010)
Continuing the legacy, Kia facelifted the second-generation Optima after three years. The front fascia was completely redesigned after the facelift. Old bulky headlights were replaced with narrow ones, and a Tiger-nose radiator grille was added to provide a sharp exterior.
This time, the interior was completely revised, featuring a newly designed dashboard with electronic commands and controls. Along with the dashboard, the centre console and stack were also redesigned.
The car was powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine paired with a 5-speed manual or an optional 5-speed automatic transmission system.
Third Generation Kia Optima (2010 to 2016)
The third generation of Optima was unveiled by Kia at the New York International Auto Show in 2010. The sharp exterior of the predecessors was enhanced in this generation. Swept-back narrow headlights were present that were submerged in the Tiger-nose radiator grille. The fog lights positioned at the lower bumper were also swept-back.
This time, the cabin was equipped with a large infotainment system, navigation system, heated front seats and moonroof.
Kia offered 2.0 and 2.4-litre petrol and 1.7-litre diesel engine. In a few markets, the hybrid variant of Optima was also available.
Fourth Generation Kia Optima (2016 to 2019)
The fourth generation of Optima was more aerodynamic and longer than its predecessors. Kia redesigned the front fascia and installed a narrow radiator grille with eye-shaped headlights. The lower bumper features two air intakes and a wide grille in between.
The longer wheelbase of the fourth generation increases legroom inside the cabin. Higher-quality upholstery and padded materials were used to ensure the maximum comfort of passengers. An 8-inch infotainment system supported by Apple CarPlay and Android Auto was present.
Three different engines were available in the fourth generation Optima: a 1.6 and 2.0-litre turbo engine and a 2.4-litre naturally aspirated engine. The 6-speed automatic transmission system is standard with these engines.
Fourth Generation Kia Optima Facelift (2018 to 2020)
The facelifted version of the fourth-generation Optima was released in selected markets. The sporty exterior of the fourth generation was enhanced in the facelifted version. Tiger-nose front fascia featuring narrow LED headlights and a sculptured radiator grille was present.
The cabin was equipped with a touch-screen infotainment system positioned at the centre console. Along with this, a wide range of modern car safety features was also embedded in the facelifted Optima.
The car was powered by an advanced 1.6-litre turbocharged engine accompanied by a 7-speed (dual-clutch) automatic gearbox.
Current Generation of Kia Optima (2020 to Present)
Kia applied a new design language to create the latest Kia Optima available in the market. That said, the car features a mesh-style radiator grille, narrow headlights, LED fog lights, a sloop roof and an uplifted rear end.
The interior was decorated with high-quality material and upholstery. The infotainment system was positioned over the centre stack next to the instrument cluster. The gear lever had a flat head which resembled the aircraft lever.
Kia offers two different engines: a 1.6-litre and a 2.5-litre petrol engine. The engine was paired with a traction-controlled AWD drivetrain system and an 8-speed automatic transmission system.
This was the complete Kia Optima history. Optima offers a price-to-feature equilibrium which increases its popularity in the mid-size category. If you are also interested in availing of all these features, browse through these used Kia Optima models for sale in the UAE and drive your own Optima.
