Car History: Ford Mustang
In the early 1960s, the Ford Motor Company aimed to build a sporty sedan targeting the younger audience. After four years, the Ford Mustang was revealed at the 1964 World’s Fair, New York. The model got instant popularity due to its efficient engine, higher agility and unique sporty styling. In fact, Mustang became the inspiration for a new genre of automobile named “Pony Cars”.

All Mustang Generations
Ford Mustang is counted among the most popular used American makes and models in the UAE. The brand has rolled off six generations of Mustang in the market. Each generation is equipped with advanced and innovative features to compete with the shifting automotive standards.
Let’s take a look at the history of this iconic series by Ford, starting with some of the popular old Mustang models.
First Generation (1964 to 1974)
First-generation Ford Mustang was a two-seater coupe with a distinctive exterior. A large bonnet was paired with a small 2+2 cockpit which was a rare design at that time. Along with this, a pushed-out grille, round headlights and air intake at the front wheels complete its sportier appearance.
The GT350 Shelby Mustang was released in 1965 with a new look. The car was manufactured from fibre which reduces the overall weight of the car. Due to its higher agility and lighter body, It was considered a road version of NASCAR. The famous two-strip Mustang paint design was also offered in the Shelby model series.
In the initial models, an in-line six-cylinder engine was offered, coupled with a 3-speed manual transmission system. Later, the in-line engine was replaced with an efficient V8 engine.
Second Generation (1974 to 1978)
The second generation Mustang was designed to continue the legacy of its successful predecessors. The essence of a Mustang was maintained with a signature front grille, scalloped sides and three-piece tail lights. The generation was offered in two different body types, a twin-door coupe and a fastback.
For the first time, Ford introduces its four-cylinder engine in this series. Apart from this, a 2.8-litre V6 engine was also offered.
The 1976 Mustang Cobra was rolled off with a large rear spoiler, blue stripes and bonnet scoop which makes it distinguishable. This iconic model has been featured in a number of movies and is still known as one of the most famous movie cars of all time.
Third Generation (1979 to 1993)
The third generation Mustang received a major facelift with a sleeker exterior. It marks the evolution of Ford Mustang in the industry. The three-segment taillights were replaced with six-segment tail lights and side scallops were excluded. Moreover, the signature running horse logo was replaced with an oval-shaped blue-coloured Ford logo. The generation was available in a two-door coupe and three-door hatchbacks.
No major changes were observed under the hood. However, the 3-speed manual transmission system was upgraded to 5-speed manual transmission system.
Fourth Generation (1994 to 2004)
The fourth generation Mustang was completely redesigned to cater to the requirements of the new millennium. The new Mustang features a standard size bonnet with sharp contours and multiple air intakes on the body. The front fender was decorated with a special 35th anniversary badge.
The model series was offered with more efficient V6 and V8 engines capable of producing higher engine torque. The limited-edition Cobra R was equipped with a 4.6-litre V8 engine that can produce a maximum of 320 hp.
Fifth Generation (2004 to 2015)
The fifth generation of Mustang was inspired by the old Mustang models. It features a flat front with black grilles and rounded headlights. The contours run from the front and end up at the three-segmented tail light. The retro feel of the cabin was maintained with chromed rings round tachometer and speedometer. However, bucket seats were upgraded with a headrest.
The later models of this generation and their trims V6 Deluxe, V6 Premium and GT Premium were also equipped with luxury and modern safety features. For luxury, it features leather upholstery and a remote ignition system. Whereas, for safety, it had cruise control, disc brakes and front-seat side airbags.
The 2009 Ford Shelby GT known for being an ultimate muscle car was also a part of this regime. It was designed aerodynamically with side sills, a duck-tail and a lower lip spoiler. The car was powered by a supercharged V8 engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission system.
The generation was equipped with a 4.0-litre V6 engine. An efficient V8 engine was also offered in 4.0-litre and 4.6-litre variants.
Sixth Generation (2015 to Present)
The latest generation of Mustang carries the signature Pony car features. It features a large grille with rounded headlights, bigger bumpers and side sculpting. The roofline extended from the front end to the tail lights. The latest generation is offered with multiple driving modes and driver-assist features.
Under the hood, 5.2-litre and 5.0-litre V8 engines were offered coupled with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission system.
