The 70 Series has remained a game-changer in the history of Toyota Land Cruiser. With a commanding exterior and classic design, the wagon has been in production for a long time.
In Production Since 1984
A car’s generation or model changes every two to three years, a general practice observed in the auto industry. However, things are a little different for the 70 Series. It seems the time is standing still for the evergreen nameplate. Technically, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series was launched to replace the 60-series. However, it brought back some of the old-school features of the 40-series, including its sturdy design elements.
This is where the Land Cruiser nameplate targeted different markets with different models. The 60-Series and 70-Series were produced side by side, offering varying driving experiences. This is one of the many interesting facts about the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series that off-road enthusiasts must know.
Durability of Ladder-Frame Construction
One of the many fun facts about the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series is that it gets its toughness from the robust ladder-frame construction. Built for challenging terrains, the nameplate has evolved over the years, focusing on comfort as well. In 1999, the front axle’s leaf springs were replaced with the coil spring feature. The enhancement in the car’s suspension system was to improve the overall ride comfort.
During the same year, various engine configurations were also introduced for the 70 Series. The petrol variants had 4-, 5-, and 6-cylinder engines while the diesel model came with a 4.5-litre V8 engine. Offering a delightful combination of comfort and rigidness is how the Land Cruiser 70 Series has become an all-time favourite off-roader.
A Nameplate Brought Back to Life
Given the nameplate’s consistent popularity, its Overlander generation made a comeback in the UAE in 2022. The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series Overlander had boxy styling and classic features. The car was launched as a hardtop and double cabin 5-door wagon. Similarly, the double cabin option was also available for the 4-door pickup off-roader. However, the specs of an SUV vs a pickup truck cater to different audiences, depending on their preferences and travel needs.
