Safe driving holds the utmost importance to avoid accidents or mishaps. Observing the traffic and regularly inspecting vehicles help ensure the safety of the drivers and the surrounding pedestrians and objects. That said, Road and Transport Authority (RTA) Dubai has introduced laws and regulations.
From driving defensively to staying active, several safety tips for truck drivers help maintain the traffic flow and avoid harm. Following the safety tips for truck drivers and completing the necessary training is essential. Here is a comprehensive guide on the truck driver safety rules that will help one understand the precautionary measures while driving a commercial vehicle.
Road Safety Tips for Truck Drivers
Heavy-duty vehicles are entirely different from light-transport vehicles (LTVs). These vehicles have heavy engines and complex parts to carry heavy loads. Unlike cars and motorcycles, driving these heavy-duty vehicles require specialised training.
These trucks can cost a fortune to the company if any accident occurs. Therefore, commercial driver safety tips ensure the necessary precautions and save costs and lives.
The following safety tips for truck drivers will protect the occupants, the vehicle, pedestrians, and surrounding properties. Let’s go through them.
Truck Driving Laws and Road Signs
Several rules and regulations ensure road safety for drivers. For instance, RTA laws for heavy-duty vehicles specify the speed limits, lanes and other safety measures. According to the laws, here are some safety tips for truck drivers:
- Follow the speed limits in the UAE. Truck drivers can accelerate up to 80 km/h.
- Wear a seat belt and follow other obligations and behaviours to avoid traffic fines in Dubai.
- Park the truck in the designated parking spaces.
- Follow all the important road signs in the UAE, such as warnings, speed limits and hazard signs.
Driver Alertness
Driving a truck is a tough job. You must be awake and alert for long hours. Truck drivers may drive day and night. Besides following the safety tips for driving at night, they must ensure getting proper sleep before going out to drive.
Medicines that may cause drowsy driving should be avoided to stay active. Moreover, one of the essential safety tips for truck drivers is to take breaks during their trip and stay alert while driving. Keeping a count of vehicles around and the landmarks you cross can help increase your alertness on a long route.
Another factor that plays an essential role in truck driver safety is vehicle ergonomics. For instance, drivers must adjust the seat and steering in a comfortable position.
Personal Safety
Another safety tip for truck drivers is to ensure no loose drink cans, boards or objects are under the seat or near the acceleration, brake or clutch pedal. Furthermore, drivers should climb or leave the cab carefully to avoid injury.
When parking the vehicle by the road, ensure walking from the front to face the traffic. Besides, use hazard warning lights or slow-moving vehicle signs when parking the truck on the roadside.
Pre and Post-Trip Inspections
Before and after driving a truck, inspect the vehicle for problems, such as the following:
- Look for tyre pressure using a gauge before driving. A tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) helps, but checking manually beforehand can minimise the risk.
- Check for any damaged parts, cracks or loose parts.
- Fix the cab and trailer doors. Fasten them properly since loads can fall and cause accidents.
- Check wheels and rims.
- Inspect the brakes and fuel system.
- Check and fix engine problems, such as you may encounter causes of engine oil leaks. Ensure fixing it.
- Monitor the electrical system working and check the driver’s controls, such as the ignition system, instruments, mirrors and emergency equipment.
It is one of the truck driver safety rules to check the brakes, tyres, wheels, different vehicle filter types and semitrailers coupling. After the pre-trip inspection, follow the same inspection tips for heavy-vehicle drivers every time you leave for a trip and come back.
Load Storage
Since a truck covers long journeys, it may be disastrous if the load falls while driving on highways or roads. It will disrupt the traffic and can be dangerous for approaching vehicles. While motorists must follow the safety tips for driving around heavy-duty vehicles, any load falling can cause an accident and disrupt the traffic flow.
Therefore, one of the trucker safety tips is to measure the length of the cab or trailers and ensure checking the maximum load limit. Learning details about length and load limits can help steer or park the vehicle safely. Plus, you can become a courteous driver by following these tips and knowing that you are sharing the road with other motorists.
Loading and Unloading
Proper loading and unloading are essential for road safety. Placing the load in the right position and not exceeding the limit is a necessary safety tip for truck drivers to follow. Use constraints to prevent the luggage or goods from falling.
These essential safety tips for truck drivers help protect the passengers in the vehicle and pedestrians outside from accidents. Besides, when driving the truck, ensure you receive training beforehand. This training will teach you the correct technique to drive in different conditions and control the vehicle.
When you buy a used heavy-duty vehicle in the UAE, ensure you follow the traffic rules. Not adhering to the driving rules and regulations in the UAE can result in fines, black points, vehicle impoundment and driving licence cancellation.
