Make Matters: Mazda Logo History, Meaning and Design
The emblem we see on cars is more than a symbol representing the make. It carries the prestige associated with the brand and secures a significant position from a branding point of view. Therefore, designers pay great attention to that logo and often revise it to meet the latest market demands or a change in brand’s philosophy. Mazda is one of the companies that have focused on their emblem and revised it regularly.
Let’s take a closer look at the Mazda car logo and dissect how it evolved during the year.
Mazda Logo Evolution
Mazda is counted among the few car brands whose meaningful car logo has evolved a lot with time. It is also one of the car brands that use multiple logos on different vehicles at the same time. The name Mazda comes from Ahura Mazda, where Ahura is the God of light and Mazda means wisdom. Both of these elements are clearly visible in Mazda’s logo. Here we have listed the timeline representing Mazda logo evolution.
1934 to 1954
The first logo registered by Mazda was the simplest logo design. It only consists of the brand Name “ Mazda’ written in plain language. These logos were used on the tricycles and mini-trucks manufactured by the brand at that time.
1936 to July 1959
The second logo registered by the company was the most interesting yet elegant one. It represents the three repetitive letters ‘M’. This was representing the company’s full name by then “ Mazda Motor Manufacturer ”. Whereas, the ends of each alphabet were pointed like a wing, representing the rapid growth and bright future of the company.
1951 to 1972
Along with the aforementioned elegant logo, Mazda also uses a traditional logo from the 50s till the 70s. This Mazda logo consists of three Japanese letters that represent the new leadership of the corporation. It was launched when Tsuneji Matsuda, son of president Jujiro took over the company’s presidency.
1954 to 1974
Mazda started importing its vehicle to other countries in the year 1949. Therefore, a new emblem was needed to be registered as an international representation of the company. This time, the brand opted for a more simpler and English version of the logo. Contrary to old Mazda logo, this emblem pronounces the name of ‘Mazda’ and was written in an attractive font.
1959 to 1974
By the mid 19th century Mazda was getting famous for its passenger cars. They use a logo consisting of the alphabet ‘M’ with two extended ends. This logo was used on the Mazda R360 and other coupes till 1974.
1975 to 1997
The classic logo of Mazda written in bold fonts was adopted in 1975. The logo simply shows the name of the brand but got instant popularity. During the era of 1975 to 1997 five different emblems were used by the brand with minute modifications. In these names, all the letters are in small caps other than the letter ‘D’. This was done on purpose as using small ‘D’ can reduce the perfection of the logo.
1997 to 2015
By 1997 Mazda was a popular name in the market, as its model series were equipped with advanced safety features and high-power engines. The company then adopted a logo that contains a V-shaped element enclosed in a rectangle box with round edges. On close observation, the alphabet V resembles an eagle willing to take a long flight. This represents the mission and vision statement of Mazda.
2015 to Present Day
Now, Mazda is counted among one of the most popular used Japanese cars in the UAE. They adopted a new logo in 2015 that is similar to the previous one, but the edges are more sharpened. Along with this, the colour combination is also revised. This emblem fits accurately with the modern Mazda cars designed by using KODO design philosophy.
