SUVs are highly popular in the UAE due to their versatility and capability to handle both city roads and off-road terrain. Many owners enjoy desert drives, sandy trails and rough paths, which can subtly affect a vehicle’s performance over time. When buying a used SUV, inspecting the vehicle thoroughly is essential to ensure it maintains reliability and safety. A careful used SUV inspection in the UAE allows buyers to make informed decisions.
Inspecting Used SUVs for Off-road Damage
Used SUVs for sale in the UAE are often well-maintained and a thorough inspection ensures their condition meets your expectations.
Check the Undercarriage
This is among the most important used SUV inspection tips. In the UAE, the undercarriage is exposed to varied terrain, including desert rocks, sand dunes and coastal areas. It is important to check for scrapes, dents or worn skid plates. Vehicles driven along rocky terrains may have minor marks around suspension mounts, while coastal driving can leave traces of salt that should be cleaned regularly.
Using a torchlight or lifting the SUV at a workshop allows for a detailed inspection, helping ensure the vehicle’s long-term durability and reliable performance.
Inspect the Suspension System
Off-road driving can place significant stress on an SUV’s suspension. Therefore, check for any oil traces around shock absorbers, which indicate wear and ensure the vehicle height is even. Listen for unusual noises such as knocking or creaking over bumps during a test drive and observe the vehicle’s stability on uneven surfaces. Identifying suspension issues early helps maintain long-term performance and can prevent costly repairs.
Examine the Tyres and Wheels
Tyres are often exposed to extreme heat and rough sand while driving through various types of off-roading terrains. Check for uneven tread wear caused by frequent off-road driving or incorrect tyre pressure.
Cuts, bulges and cracks are also SUV off-road wear signs. Inspect sidewalls carefully, as weak sidewalls can be risky on highways. Look for dents or bends because rims also suffer when hitting sharp rocks in the off-road spots of the UAE.
Inspect the Drivetrain and Differential
Frequent off-road driving can place an extra load on the drivetrain. Therefore, it is important to inspect the transfer case and differentials for proper lubrication and ensure all 4×4 modes, including low-range gear, engage smoothly. Testing these functions helps maintain optimal performance and reliability over time.
Assess the Exhaust System
The car exhaust system sits low and is easily damaged when climbing dunes or rocky slopes. Look for scrapes, dents or loose hangers. In coastal areas, humidity and salt can also cause rusting in the exhaust pipe.
Listen for loud or unusual noise during a test drive, which may indicate leakage. Check around the joints for black soot marks, which often appear when gases escape.
Inspect the Body and Frame
SUVs driven off-road often show surface scratches on bumpers and side panels. Check the frame rails for alignment and ensure the doors and panels have a consistent paint finish. Assess steering and vehicle alignment during a test drive to confirm the frame is properly aligned.
