How to Set up an Electricity Connection in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, is known for its modern infrastructure and well-developed utility services. Whether you’re a resident, business owner or newcomer, obtaining a reliable and hassle-free electricity connection is vital for daily operations and comfortable living.
The Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC) oversees water and electricity supply in the city. It offers several services to both tenants and property owners. That said, getting a new ADDC electricity connection requires specific guidelines and procedures. Let’s go through these requirements.
How to Get an ADDC Connection
Tenants who have recently moved to the Emirate must register the tenancy contract with Tawtheeq. These registration details are automatically used for ADDC bills and payments. You can set up an online account via ADDC’s official website or visit one of the authority’s branches.
For an owner-occupier, the tenancy contract can not be set up. Therefore, they must submit a separate registration application for an ADDC new connection. Also, tenants living in areas outside Tawtheeq registrations must submit a move-in application for setting up a new electricity connection in Abu Dhabi.
How to Apply for a Residential Electricity Connection
Here is how to obtain a new ADDC electricity connection for residential properties in Abu Dhabi.
Required Documents
Copies of the following documents are required for the application:
For tenants
- Emirates ID
- Passport – visa pages and ID
- Family book (for nationals of the UAE)
- Property’s Former Account Closing Letter that the user will move into
- Tenancy contract
For owners

- Former Account Closing Letter for the property that the applicant will move into
- A copy of the site plan or premise ownership deed. Abu Dhabi Municipality must issue and verify it.
Note: The Account Closing Letter (formerly known as Clearance Certificate) would be issued by the authority when the previous ADDC account for your last property was closed. The landlord will provide the letter’s copy.
Process
The procedure for a new ADDC connection is straightforward. Submit the documents online or at one of the ADDC branches. If you are applying online, select whether you are a tenant or owner of the residential property. Then, enter the premise ID number.
The premise ID number is given on Tenancy Contract or Property Purchase Contract. After doing so, enter the property address and submit it. Your application will be processed by ADDC and a new ADDC electricity connection will be set up.
Account Activation Charges
There are no ADDC connection charges for setting up an account. However, AED 1000 deposit must be paid which will be included in the first bill. At the time of closing your ADDC account, the deposit will be returned or it can be transferred to a new property.
