Women’s car ownership in the UAE has been on a steady rise over recent years, reflecting a broader social and economic transformation in the region. The automotive market is now witnessing a clear shift as more women are taking the wheel, not just as drivers but as independent buyers influencing automotive market and sales trends.
Growing Share of Female Buyers
Recent data from General Motors (GM) Middle East highlights this shift clearly. While male ownership still forms the majority, female car owners in the UAE and across the Gulf are becoming a significant consumer segment. Over the past three years, female interest and ownership in full-size pickup trucks, a category traditionally favoured by men, has more than doubled.
Numbers Speak Volumes About the Shift in Dynamics
According to GM Middle East, women accounted for 9% of all GM truck buyers in the GCC in 2024, marking a notable increase from previous years. Among the Gulf markets, Kuwait leads with 13% of all female truck owners, followed by the UAE at 9% and Qatar at 7%. These numbers indicate that the rise of women drivers in the UAE is part of a wider regional trend. More women are not only obtaining driving licences but also actively purchasing vehicles that suit their lifestyle needs.
The UAE’s growing community of female drivers reflects both cultural change and increasing financial independence. The market data also points to a generational shift: a 50% year-over-year increase in vehicle ownership among Emirati women aged 20 to 29. Moreover, a third of GMC Sierra owners in the UAE are middle-aged Emirati women aged 30 to 49. This indicates that women buying cars in the UAE span multiple age groups, from young professionals to established families.
Women’s Car Ownership Influence on Vehicle Segments
Women in the UAE are showing a growing affinity for pickup trucks such as the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. Both of these models have traditionally been marketed based on their off-road capabilities and rugged appeal. GM’s regional sales data reveals that pickup trucks are now seen as lifestyle choices reflecting independence, confidence and versatility.
This shift in perception has contributed to a rise in women’s vehicle ownership in the UAE. Manufacturers respond with more inclusive marketing and customisation options appealing to a wider audience. For example, the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models now include features such as Google Built-In, available Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These features make the pick-up trucks practical for off-roading, commercial and leisure use.
Broader Market Trends
The overall rise of women’s car ownership in the UAE ties into a larger transformation within the regional automotive sector. GM Middle East recorded an 18% year-on-year increase in Chevrolet and GMC pickup truck sales in the first half of 2025. This growth reflects shifting demographics, with youth and women emerging as key contributors to new vehicle purchases.
The data further suggests that the pickup truck segment, once seen as a niche category, is evolving into a mainstream choice for diverse drivers. Whether for weekend desert trips, family use or daily commuting, these vehicles are now being selected by women who value a mix of practicality and performance.
Cultural and Economic Factors
The increase in women’s vehicle ownership in the UAE also reflects broader societal progress. Over the past decade, the UAE has placed strong emphasis on empowering women through education, employment and equal opportunities. This empowerment extends to consumer behaviour, where women are making independent decisions about mobility and vehicle ownership.
As a result, automakers such as GM have adapted their marketing strategies to better represent and cater to female customers. Campaigns like ‘Truck Mania’, which was held across the GCC in 2025, highlighted this trend. The month-long event highlighted the evolving face of vehicle ownership and offered experiences tailored for a diverse customer base that increasingly includes women.
Manufacturers that recognise and adapt to this shift are likely to see sustained growth in this emerging segment. The UAE, with its strong focus on innovation, inclusivity and advanced infrastructure, remains at the forefront of this transformation.
Female car owners in the UAE are redefining traditional automotive norms and contributing to the sector’s growth towards diversity. The rise of women drivers in the UAE reflects not only changing lifestyles but also the region’s commitment to inclusivity and modern mobility.
