Subaru WRX, with its distinctive blue and gold livery, has become a global phenomenon since its debut in Japan in 1992. The three letters ‘WRX’ stand for World Rally Experimental, reflecting Subaru’s serious entry into the world of rallying. Over the years, the WRX has not only dominated the rally scene but has also become a beloved road car, capturing the hearts of enthusiasts worldwide. Let’s explore the rich history of the Subaru WRX.

History of Subaru WRX

Known for its distinctive boxer engine, symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and rally-bred heritage, the WRX has captivated enthusiasts since its origin.

Let’s go through the detailed journey of the Subaru WRX over the years.

First-generation Subaru WRX (1992 – 1999)

The first-generation Subaru WRX featured a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged ‘boxer’ engine, delivering 237 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 179 Nm of torque at 3,500 RPM. Moreover, the WRX could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds with a top speed of 89 kmh. The symmetrical all-wheel drive system, paired with the engine, set the stage for the WRX’s success.

Moreover, initially, the Subaru WRX was to be named ‘Loyale’, however, it took the name ‘Impreza’ right before its release. The Subaru Impreza WRX made its entry into the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 1992.

In 1995, with legendary driver Colin McRae at the wheel, Subaru claimed both the constructors’ and drivers’ championships, solidifying the Impreza WRX’s place in rallying history. The blue and gold colours of Subaru became synonymous with rally racing for a generation.

Throughout its evolution, the Impreza WRX underwent exterior enhancements and interior redesigns, notably in the 1997 and 1998 model years. In 1998, the performance-focused 2.5RS debuted, showcasing a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine, upgraded braking performance and enhanced styling cues. Subsequent updates in the 1999 model year included a refreshed front bumper.

Second-generation Subaru WRX (2000 – 2006)

The second-generation WRX, launched in 2000, was slightly larger than its predecessor. It introduced the iconic ‘bug-eye’ headlights which became its distinctive design feature.

Moreover, the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine received upgrades and Subaru introduced the even more potent WRX STI variant. It continued the model’s rally success and garnered a strong fanbase worldwide.

Third-generation Subaru WRX (2007 – 2013)

The third-generation Subaru Impreza WRX was launched in 2007 at the New York Auto Show. It was the last to offer a hatchback body style, followed by a four-door sedan. The new generation Subaru WRX featured a more aggressive design and a larger 2.5-litre turbocharged engine.

Additionally, the Subaru WRX history featured many changes in its third-generation. These features included a slightly elongated and widened body, coupled with an extended car wheelbase. Significant enhancements encompassed the adoption of MacPherson strut and double wishbone suspensions, along with refinements to noise, vibration and harshness levels. In this generation, Subaru prioritised augmenting size, stiffness and safety features while concurrently reducing overall weight as compared to its predecessor.

Fourth-generation Subaru WRX (2014 – 2021)

As compared to the previous generations of Subaru WRX, the fourth-generation model dropped ‘Impreza’ from its name in 2014, signalling the WRX’s evolution into a standalone model. The car featured an all-new 2.0-litre direct injection turbocharged boxer engine. The powerful engine enabled the Subaru WRX to deliver a remarkable 268 horsepower at 5,600 RPM and a peak torque of 350 Nm within the 2,400 – 5,200 RPM range.

Moreover, with improvements in handling and rigidity, the WRX maintained its reputation for impressive performance. Also, Subaru continued to refine the WRX STI, introducing improvements in car aerodynamics and technological advancements.

Fifth-generation Subaru WRX (2022 – Present)

We have come a long way in the history of Subaru WRX. The latest iteration of the WRX unveiled in 2022 includes the iconic sedan and a sports wagon variant. The core performance feature of the new Subaru WRX is its symmetrical all-wheel drive range which delivers an optimal distribution of power for increased traction and offers uniform stability.

The 2023 Subaru WRX boasts a 2.4-litre direct injection turbocharged boxer engine, producing 271 hp and 350 Nm of torque. With a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 249 kmh, the WRX remains a force to be reckoned with. Moreover, the 2023 WRX is build on the Subaru Global Platform which improves road handling and ride comfort.

Additionally, the advanced safety features and technology, including Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, are integrated into the current generation. This technology has features such as cruise control, automatic emergency steering, pre-collision braking and lane-keeping assist. Furthermore, the 2023 Subaru WRX also features the StarLink multimedia technology which offers integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
