Launched in 1989, Subaru Legacy is a model with a rich heritage that has evolved significantly throughout its history. The mid-size sedan adapted to changing automotive trends, customer preferences and technological advancements. Let’s go through the Subaru History Legacy in detail.
Subaru Legacy History Timeline
Subaru Legacy history comprises seven generations. Throughout its timeline, the sedan has continually refined the balance of performance, comfort and safety. This is what made Legacy a reliable family car with unique driving dynamics. Let’s overview the Subaru Legacy generations.
First Generation (1989-1994)
The Legacy was Subaru’s attempt to enter the midsize sedan market, competing with popular models like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. It introduced the Subaru boxer engine and all-wheel drive as standard, showcasing Subaru’s commitment to performance and unique engineering. Both these features set Subaru apart in the market by offering AWD as a standard feature in most models.
Legacy was also among the key models that included a 2.0-litre engine and a turbocharged variant, making it one of the early sports sedans with a turbocharged engine. These engines are different from naturally aspirated engines. Here is the difference between turbocharged and naturally aspirated engines.
Second Generation (1994-1999)
There was a design shift in this generation. Subaru Legacy saw a more refined, modern design with a focus on aerodynamics. Subaru also introduced a dual-range transmission and a more powerful 2.5-litre engine option for enthusiasts and drivers seeking more power. This period also saw the birth of the Legacy Outback, a rugged wagon variant that later became a standalone model and started the crossover trend.
Third Generation (1999-2004)
By the third generation, Subaru refined the Legacy’s suspension for a smoother ride and better handling, with an additional focus on safety features. The Legacy GT with a turbocharged engine was introduced in this era, bringing a performance edge to the lineup. This generation also marked the point where Subaru standardised AWD on all Legacy models in North America. This further established the sedan’s reputation for reliability in all weather conditions.
Fourth Generation (2004-2009)
In its fourth generation, Legacy received a sleeker, sportier look and improved aerodynamics. Subaru added luxury features like leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control to appeal to a more upscale audience. Then, the 2.5GT variant featured a turbocharged engine with impressive power output, and a new 3.0-litre flat-six engine was also introduced for even more performance. This variant gained critical acclaim for its blend of performance, safety and reliability, often winning awards for value and quality.
Fifth Generation (2009-2014)
Subaru increased the Legacy’s dimensions, giving it a roomier interior to attract family sedan buyers. New fuel-efficient engines were introduced for improved fuel efficiency, including a 2.5-litre flat-four and an optional 3.6-litre flat-six engine. For enhanced safety, the carmaker introduced its Subaru EyeSight driver-assist technology, which offered adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and pre-collision braking.
Sixth Generation (2014-2019)
This Subaru Legacy generation featured a more modern design with enhanced technology, including a larger infotainment screen and smartphone integration. By this time, EyeSight technology became standard or available on most trims, setting a new benchmark for safety in its class. Subaru also introduced a sportier trim level – the Legacy Sport. The model boasted unique styling cues and performance-inspired design elements.
Seventh Generation (2020-Present)
Built on Subaru’s Global Platform, the current Legacy is the most advanced yet, with improvements in safety, handling and noise reduction. The latest Legacy models include a 2.5-litre flat-four engine and an optional 2.4-litre turbocharged engine for more efficiency and performance. The Legacy now features an 11.6-inch touchscreen, making it one of the most advanced interiors in its class, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, among a suite of other connectivity options.
