With great speed comes great responsibility – a principle well recognised by some of the world’s most renowned automakers. Cars that break the high-speed barriers are a thrill to drive. However, safety always remains a major concern. An intelligent solution to this issue is the presence of a speed key in cars. These keys are found in certain high-performance vehicles, designed to bring down the top speed of the car by a significant margin. Let’s find out more about the car’s speed key function.
More About a Speed Key in Cars
It is a feature in some high-performance cars that limits top speed when activated. These speed limiters in cars are powered by advanced tech and aerodynamic control mechanisms. The term ‘Speed Key’ was officially introduced by Bugatti. However, Volvo calls a similar speed controlling functionality ‘Care Key’.
One of the interesting facts about Bugatti Chiron is that the speed key limits its top speed to 380 km/h. Without a speed key inserted, the hyper sports car easily surpasses the 420 km/h mark.
Speed Key Features
Some of the evident features and benefits of the speed key include:
Unlocks Full Performance
The speed key activates the car’s top speed and maximum performance capabilities, allowing drivers to experience the vehicle’s intended capabilities.
Safety Feature
It prevents accidental access to extreme speeds. It is to ensure that the driver is aware of and prepared for the high-performance mode.
Driver Responsibility
The speed key emphasises that the driver is in control of the high-performance setting, reinforcing the idea that they understand the implications of such speeds.
Exclusive Experience
The speed key and the hidden location of the keyhole contribute to the overall exclusivity and luxury of the vehicle.
Accessing Speed Key Explained
In a hypercar like the Bugatti Chiron, the speed key is a physical key inserted into a slot on the driver’s side near the seat. It unlocks the car’s full top speed potential by adjusting aerodynamics and ride height. On the other hand, in Volvo cars, the electronic speed key allows the owner to set a speed limit for other drivers. It is configured through the vehicle’s centre display in models like the XC90. The location and accessibility of the speed key may vary from model to model.
