The Kia Soul has become an icon of compact, quirky design and has earned a reputation as a versatile, functional vehicle perfect for urban lifestyles. Known for its boxy silhouette and spacious interior, the Soul has carved out a niche in the world of subcompact crossovers since its debut. Here’s an in-depth look at Kia Soul history generations, including design evolution, performance enhancements and technological advancements.
Kia Soul Generations
Since its launch, the Kia Soul has been known for its unique design, versatile features and urban-friendly performance. It quickly became popular among drivers looking for a vehicle that stood out from the crowd. Moreover, the Kia Soul is one of the most popular used Kia SUVs in the UAE.
Let’s explore Kia Soul models by year in detail, tracking their transformation over time.
First Generation (2008–2013)
Unveiled at the 2008 Paris Auto Show and launched globally in 2009, the first Kia Soul took the world by surprise with its unconventional design and urban-centric features. Inspired by the concept car shown at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, the Soul’s quirky, boxy exterior marked a departure from traditional compact cars.
One of the fascinating facts about Kia Motors is that it is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motors. The Soul was based on the Hyundai i20’s platform, making it taller and more rigid than its competitors. This made it a practical choice for city driving but slightly rougher on highways. It came with two engine options, both delivering 126 horsepower: a patrol variant and a more popular diesel engine. The vehicle was paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional automatic for the diesel.
Interior space was a standout feature due to the long wheelbase and the hatchback design. Despite its compact footprint, the Soul provided a roomy 340-litre trunk, comparable to the Kia Ceed. It also packed advanced safety options for the time, such as electronic stability control, traction control, ABS and even parking assist. This first generation laid the groundwork for the Soul’s reputation as a small but mighty urban cruiser.
Second Generation (2012–2018)
If we further explore the Kia Soul history, by 2012, the Kia Soul was ready for a refresh and the facelift was unveiled at the New York Auto Show. Kia upgraded the Soul with a more modern aesthetic, featuring larger headlights and the brand’s signature ‘tiger-nose’ grille. The bumper design became more aggressive with additional cooling areas and round fog lamps, giving it a more rugged look. Adding to its crossover appeal, Kia fitted plastic cladding around the wheel arches and side sills.
The dashboard received a complete makeover, with new side vents and a revamped centre stack. Higher trim levels offered a sat-nav system with a touchscreen and rear-view camera for added convenience. Performance improvements were made as well, with a new six-speed automatic transmission replacing the former four-speed option, creating a smoother and more efficient drive.
Despite financial challenges in the automotive world at the time, the Soul continued to thrive and win over fans with its combination of compact size and spacious, well-designed interior.
Kia Soul EV (2018–Present)
The 2020 Kia Soul EV marked a significant shift as the Soul embraced electrification. Transitioning from a niche electric variant to a mainstream offering, the Soul EV arrived with a completely new design, signalling Kia’s commitment to green technology. The updated design kept its two-box shape but introduced sleek, narrower headlights and a bolder front bumper.
Under the hood, the Soul EV showcased a 64-kWh liquid-cooled battery that significantly extended the vehicle’s range and allowed for faster charging. Kia added an independent rear suspension, enhancing both ride comfort and handling. Inside, the cabin featured a 10.25-inch infotainment screen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Buyers could choose between two power outputs, a 100 kW and a more powerful 150 kW motor, catering to a range of driving needs.
Third Generation (2018–2022)
In 2018, Kia revealed the third-generation Soul at the Los Angeles Auto Show. This version retained the Soul’s signature boxy design while adding more refined sculpting and futuristic lighting elements. Key design updates included redesigned daytime running lights, a two-tone front grille and aerodynamic C-pillars mimicking aeroplane wings.
The third generation offered an upgraded cabin with wireless charging and dual-zone climate control. For the first time, Kia offered a sportier option with a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, delivering 201 horsepower with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. It was available in both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations. Safety was a priority, with advanced systems like Forward Collision Avoidance, Lane Following Assist and Blind-spot Collision Warning, among others.r
Moreover, its reasonable price tag has also made it one of the most popular pre-owned hatchbacks under AED 100K.
Fourth Generation (2022–Present)
In 2022, Kia introduced an updated version of the Soul for the 2023 model year, with refined design elements and advanced safety features. This generation saw Kia make a bold choice by offering just one engine—a 2.0-litre inline-four, paired with a CVT transmission. The exterior was updated with slim LED headlights and a wide lower grille, enhancing the vehicle’s modern appeal.
The Soul was now available in five trim levels, with higher trims featuring a 10.25-inch touchscreen and connectivity with the Kia Connect. For the base trim, Kia added new safety features like Blind Spot Collision Avoidance and Rear Cross Collision Avoidance. This model reflects Kia’s growing emphasis on safety and efficiency while maintaining the Soul’s distinctive, playful spirit.
