Work in Progress: RTA is Developing 19 Truck Rest Stops in Dubai
The safety and convenience of drivers have always been the utmost priority for Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA). The authority’s truck rest stops and lay-bys initiative is a prime example in this respect. It is an ongoing public infrastructure project carried out in collaboration with the private sector. Below are more details about the upcoming RTA Truck rest stops in Dubai.
Dubai to Build 19 Truck Rest Stops

RTA is constructing 19 truck rest stops and lay-bys in supply chain and logistics hotspots across Dubai. The project includes 16 truck rest stops and one lay-by built in collaboration with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). In addition, RTA is working on two truck lay-bys in partnership with Almutakamela Vehicle Testing and Registration. It is one of the popular vehicle testing centres in Dubai.
Capacity and Location of RTA Truck Rest Stops in Dubai
The total area designated for the 19 truck rest stops and lay-bys is over 300,000 m2. The upcoming facilities are designed to accommodate more than 1,000 trucks and heavy vehicles. Using such resting facilities is how truck drivers can ensure road safety.
Rest stops for truck drivers in Dubai will be set up in six key locations. They will be in proximity to strategic roads and logistic hubs catering to a staggering number of trucks daily.
RTA Dubai Truck Rest Stops Location

The Word from RTA

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the RTA Board of Executive Directors, expressed his satisfaction with the increased involvement of the private sector in infrastructure and public service projects.
Facilitating Drivers
According to Al Tayer’s statement, the three integrated truck lay-bys offer a wide range of services. It is to ensure the safety and well-being of drivers. These services include refuelling stations, motels, workshops, administrative buildings, etc. Other facilities include prayer rooms, driving training centres, healthcare, laundry and exchange shops.
Catering to Logistical Transport Needs
Al Tayer further elaborated on the RTA partnership with ADNOC and Almutakamela. According to him, the development envisions making Dubai a global hub for logistical transportation. Moreover, the project will cater to the soaring demand for truck parking spaces. Currently, the Emirate witnesses over 300,000 truck trips daily, transporting a whopping 1.5 metric tonnes of commodities.
Assuring Road Safety
He also emphasised the importance of providing a place for truck drivers to rest and refuel. It can help reduce fatigue and improve driver alertness. Rest stops and lay-bys can bring down truck-related accidents by 50%, according to Al Tayer. To learn more about road safety rules and initiatives in Dubai, read here.
