All about Mercedes Drive Pilot
Human errors and misjudgements account for a large majority of road accidents. From enhanced road safety to making driving operations significantly easier, autonomous driving has made driving a lot more convenient and safer. Therefore, it is not a surprise why we are seeing so many automotive manufacturers integrating high levels of autonomy and driver-assist systems in their cars. German luxury automotive brand Mercedes-Benz, for instance, offers Drive Pilot technology – a Level 3 self-driving technology.
Read on below to learn about Mercedes Drive Pilot in depth.
How Drive Pilot Works
Mercedes-Benz Drive Pilot is only available when the vehicle is operated inside its Operational Design Domain (ODD). The ODD includes road and traffic conditions in which the Drive Pilot is developed to function and outside of which it will not engage even if you try to turn it on.
When the car is within the Drive Pilot’s ODD, the driver is notified of the feature’s availability. Drive Pilot’s ODD includes moderate to jammed traffic in fair and bright weather. When the Drive Pilot mode is activated, you can become a fallback-ready user. You can activate Mercedes’ Drive Pilot via a button on the steering wheel. Although you can do whatever you want when Drive Pilot has taken control of your car, you must be ready to take control of driving if the need arises to avoid any untoward incident.
When Drive Pilot detects that it is unable to drive the car due to the car not being in its ODD or because of a technical malfunction, it will alert you and give enough time to take control of your car. In case it detects the driver is unable to restart driving themselves, the warning lights are activated and your car will be safely brought to a halt.
Drive Pilot Features
The list of automated driving features offered by Mercedes Drive Pilot is as follows:
Traffic Jam Chauffeur
When the driver activates Drive Pilot technology, it analyzes traffic conditions and takes over control of the vehicle if it deems it is safe to do so. Using the Automated Lane Keeping Systems (ALKS) technology, it keeps the car in lane without the driver’s intervention.
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)
The LiDAR system uses light waves and high-definition GPS systems to make a map of the environment and detect the traffic and road conditions on your path.
Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control
Adaptive cruise control automatically adjusts a car’s acceleration and braking. It is a safety feature that ensures a safe ride by monitoring other cars and objects on the path of your car. It functions by assisting the driver in maintaining a constant vehicle speed.
Blind Spot Monitoring
Blind spot monitoring system uses high-quality cameras and sensors to detect cars that are perilously close to or behind your vehicle. If a vehicle is detected, drivers are notified via a warning.
Automated Steering
This feature, as the name suggests, minimizes the driver’s effort in steering your car.
It is worth noting that although this Level 3 autonomous driving technology enables hands-free driving, the driver must be ready to intervene and take control of the car in case of technology error or malfunction.
Mercedes Models with Drive Pilot Technology
As of yet, the new S-class and the EQS electric sedan are the Mercedes models that are equipped with Drive Pilot technology. However, Mercedes-Benz plans to make the feature available in more models in the future.
Mercedes has introduced this technology initially in Germany only. However, it plans to expand into other countries in the future.
