Car History: Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Mercedes-Benz credited a number of model series that secured distinct positions in the industry and a major fan following across the globe. The C-Class series is one such series by the brand. The alphabet ‘C’ refers to the compact sedans launched under the C-Class banner. When launched in 1993, these cars were considered one of their own kind as compact sedans weren’t common.

Mercedes-Benz W201
Before jumping on the different C-class models, let’s discuss the first compact sedan by Mercedes, which paved the way for the C-Class.
Mercedes-Benz 190E was the first compact sedan by the brand. The car was launched in 1982 when there was no concept of C-Class. However, W201, the part of 190E’s chassis number, was used in the C-Class. Therefore, this vehicle is considered as a preamble of C-Class.

The launch of the C-Class revolutionised the concept of luxury sedans in the market. It was the perfect blend of luxury, comfort and performance packed in a compacted body. Let’s find our about different generations of C-Class in more detail.
First Generation C-Class W202 (1993 to 2000)
The first C-Class was launched with a sleek exterior and comfortable interior. This four-door sedan was built on a 68-inch wheelbase that provides a roomy cabin. For safety, anti-lock braking system and airbags were standard in all the trims. The car was offered with a six-cylinder in-line engine available in petrol and diesel variants. This engine was paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission system.
The C-Class sport trim was equipped with coil-over suspensions and a four-cylinder engine. In later models, an all-aluminium block body frame was used to accompany a strong V8 engine. The 1997 model can speed from 0 to 99 km/h in just 6.5 seconds.
Second Generation C-Class W203 (2000 to 2007)
The second generation C-Class was equipped with features that were rare in its peers at that time. The car had adaptive airbags, a multifunctional steering wheel and headlamp assist. Moreover, fibre optic cable was used in the car to avoid electric arcing.
The two headlamp designs make the exterior visibly distinguishable. The earlier models of this generation were offered with a V6 engine. Later in 2004, the model received a facelift, and the V6 engine was replaced with a 5.4-Litre V8 engine. Steering tuning and sportier suspension were also installed.
Third Generation C-Class W204 (2007 to 2014)
The history of S-Class reveal that it was inspirational model for many vehicles including C-Class. The exterior of the third generation was inspired by the S-Class. It was built on a wider wheelbase. The generation received a facelift in 2011 with redesigned LED taillights, headlamps, front fascia, dashboard and instrument cluster. The car was offered with a V8 engine paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission system.
Other than the coupe variant, a sportier C-Class Black Series was also launched in this generation. It features an advanced 6.2-Litre V8 engine. The car was able to accelerate from 0 to 99 km/h within 4.2 seconds.
Fourth Generation C-Class W205 (2014 to 2021)
In the Mercedes C-Class history, fourth-generation C-Class was the lightest, it was manufactured from aluminium and steel. This lightweight car was offered in four different compact body types including wagon, sedan, cabriolet and coupe. Under the bonnet was an in-line cylinder engine paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission system.
Fifth Generation C-Class W206 (2021 to Present)
The latest generation of C-Class was unveiled in 2021. The car features anti-roll bars, automatically adjusted suspensions, 4-wheel disc brakes and all-season tyres. It is powered by a turbo in-line four-cylinder engine accompanied by a 9-speed automatic transmission system. The C-Class crossover with an all-terrain response system is also available.
