The auto industry continues to introduce modern features that enhance safety and convenience. Automakers are continually innovating new technologies to make their cars safer and more comfortable on the road. One fine example in this regard is Mercedes-Benz Attention Assist. It’s a state-of-the-art safety mechanism based on multiple sensors, helping drivers stay alert and focused.
Before learning more about how Attention Assist works, let’s briefly discuss its history.
When Was Mercedes-Benz Attention Assist Introduced?
Given the growing concerns about fatigue driving accidents, Mercedes-Benz introduced its flagship Driver Assist system in 2009. Mercedes-Benz E-Class and S-Class models were among the first line-ups to get Driver Assist. It was an additional safety feature in cars that already had Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Brake Assist systems.
How Does Mercedes-Benz Attention Assist Works?
Driver attention can wane on long, monotonous roads. Even a brief lapse in concentration can lead to a fatal accident. That said, advanced safety features in modern cars, such as Mercedes-Benz Attention Assist, help mitigate the risk of drowsy driving.
This fatigue driving detection system works by tracking the driver’s inputs for signs of erratic or unusual driving habits. If the sensor detects any of these signs, it alerts the driver with a visual and audible signal.
Furthermore, the system illuminates a coffee cup icon in the car instrument cluster with the prompt “take a break.” It serves as a reminder to the driver to make a pit stop and get some rest. Attention Assist in Mercedes cars is activated between the speed range of 80 km/h to 180 km/h. How does Mercedes detect drowsiness? Let’s quickly go through some important technicalities of the brand’s flagship safety mechanism.
Adaptability to Driving Style and Habits
Mercedes Benz Attention Assist features advanced sensors. It uses both active and passive ADAS features to create a driver’s profile. The system gauges the driver’s habit with the help of the following parameters.
Monitoring of Steering Wheel Movement
The safety feature relies on advanced sensors to regularly detect steering movements and speed. During the first few minutes of driving, the system records the driver’s individual behaviour.
Afterwards, it compares the recorded data to the current driving feedback by the car’s electronic control unit. If there is a difference in movement or speed, the system interprets this as drowsiness and sends an alert.
Lane Sway Warning
The lane departure warning system works together with Driver Attention Assist in a Mercedes. The system interprets failure to maintain lane discipline as a sign of drowsiness. It uses a lane monitoring mechanism to detect the markings of the lane. If the car is swaying outside of the lane without the driver activating the turn signal, the system warns the driver.
Mercedes-Benz Active Steering Assist is another flagship feature of the brand. It functions by making minor steering adjustments to keep the vehicle from swaying into other lanes.
Detection of Road Conditions and Other External Elements
Mercedes-Benz Attention Assist system also takes external factors into account upon detecting unusual driving behaviour. For instance, erratic steering can also be caused by strong winds, dilapidated roads, or slippery pavement due to rain.
By taking into account these external factors, Mercedes-Benz Attention Assist prevents false alarms. However, it is important to keep the car’s traction control system on to stabilize the loose grip on the road.
Which Mercedes-Benz Cars Have Attention Assist?
Attention Assist is a standard feature on all the latest generations of Mercedes E-Class and CL-Class cars. It is also available in SLC, AMG GT, G-Class and S-Class, among other models powered by V8 and V12-engine. You can find the aforementioned and other types of models at Mercedes-Benz showrooms in the UAE.
This was everything to know about Mercedes-Benz Attention Assist. The German car brand has never ceased to amaze its fans with its innovative design and specs. Here are some more interesting facts about Mercedes-Benz you should know about.
