Honda Civic’s history spans 11 generations since its inception in 1972. From the very start, the car has adapted the latest technology and provided fine performance. Let’s go through all the Honda Civic generations and take a look back at its journey over the years.
HONDA CIVIC YEARS-WISE COMPARISON
Ranked among the most popular used Honda cars in the UAE, the Civic has maintained its reputation for over 50 years. With its first model launched in 1972 amid the fuel crisis across the globe, Honda had the challenge to make the Civic a fuel-efficient and low carbon-emission vehicle. It is quite an interesting fact about Honda that the Japanese auto brand came up with a Controlled Vortex Combustion Chamber (CVCC) engine technology. That said, CVCC technology reduced carbon emissions without using catalytic converters.
Here’s a complete overview of all 11 generations in the Honda Civic history and its evolution generation-wise.
FIRST GENERATION HONDA CIVIC (1972-1979)
Honda Civic 1st generation debuted in three different car body types: coupe, hatchback, and station wagon. The compact car came at the right time because demand for fuel-efficient vehicles increased over the muscle cars amid the fuel crisis. This first-generation Honda Civic boasted a 1.2-litre engine producing 52 horsepower.
Honda engineers produced the CVCC technology for Civic. Moreover, another engine was added to the line-up. It was a 1.5-litre engine generating 53 hp and the CVCC technology helped in fewer carbon emissions. For the first time in the Honda Civic history, a 5-speed manual transmission was added alongside two-speed automatic transmission.
The last year of the Honda Civic’s first generation came with few design and power option changes. The base unit now produced 55 hp and the CVCC unit boasted 63 hp.
SECOND GENERATION HONDA CIVIC (1980-1983)
The second generation of Honda Civic was introduced in 1980. By the time this generation was launched, Honda had a vast portfolio as an auto manufacturer. The 1.3 and 1.5-litre engines featured CVCC technology and boasted 55 hp and 67 hp, respectively. Moreover, the body dimensions were enlarged as a 4-door sedan model was launched for the first time in Honda Civic history.

Alongside, all Honda Civic models featured a fuel injection system in this Honda Civic generation.
Sedan and hatchback continued with the same engine line-up of 1.5 and 1.3-litre producing 92 hp and 70 hp, respectively. Meanwhile, the station wagon model boasted a 1.6-litre engine generating 105 hp. Later, the sedan model also came with the same engine as the Civic Si wagon model. The fourth generation Civic had a sporty exterior design and provided better functionality and handling than the previous generations.
FIFTH GENERATION HONDA CIVIC (1992-1995)
Continuing its legacy of producing sporty vehicles, Honda launched the 5th generation of Honda Civic in 1992. Honda Civic VTEC models made their way in the fifth generation.
