Car Backfiring: How to Troubleshoot
A car engine backfire is a problem worth your attention because it can cause engine damage, power loss, or fuel inefficiency. It happens when the fuel combustion happens out of the internal combustion chamber. Typically, you would know it when your vehicle makes a screeching sound at stopping and releases some fire or smoke from the tailpipe.
In such cases, you must know how to fix a car backfire. Find below five steps of the process that helps you diagnose engine backfire and troubleshoot them.
HOW TO FIX CAR BACKFIRE ISSUE
Here are the steps detailed to troubleshoot car backfire issues. Besides, don’t forget to buy the right auto accessories and parts in the UAE as well as tools that are required to fix the issue:
STEP 1: CHECK THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT
The first thing you can do is check the engine warning light on the dashboard. When your car engine backfires, the check engine light will turn on, according to most experts. However, in case your car doesn’t follow suit, you can go for step 2.
STEP 2: CHECK THE UPSTREAM EXHAUST LEAK
When unburnt fuel collides with air in the car exhaust system, it burns, causing the engine to produce a screeching sound of a backfire. Therefore, it is essential to check the upstream exhaust leak to clear away any suspects lurking around.
The common notion regarding the exhaust system is that it works under pressure constantly to eliminate waste gases from the car’s engine. However, that’s quite untrue. The fact is that the car engine system contains several pressure pulses and vacuums. The dismissal of the combustion charge causes pressure build-up with the opening and closing of the exhaust valve. As a result, fresh air is forced into the exhaust system that causes the car to backfire.
Henceforth, you have to ensure that the exhaust pipe is properly sealed.
STEP 3: INSPECT THE GULP VALVE
Engines usually have 1 or 2 air gulp valves, that is, one for every exhaust manifold. You should check the condition of the valves by removing them from their place and blowing air into each inlet. If the air flows one way, it is a good valve. If it flows both ways, you must know that the valve is broken and it’s time to replace it. You can purchase replacement valves from any nearby repair workshops or online stores.
STEP 4: INSPECT THE SPARK PLUGS
The fourth step to fix car backfire is checking the spark plugs. The ignition system has an ignition coil in vehicles, which fires up when triggered by an electronic pulse. Given that the engine’s ignition system is functioning properly, the resistance is calibrated into it. However, when there’s something wrong with the resistance, there occurs a failure in the ignition system that causes the car to crossfire into the wrong cylinder. It must be kept in mind that an inbuilt computer cannot detect the problem; therefore, the check engine light may not come on.
The most probable way to avoid this case is to change the spark plugs on a regular basis and get them checked when you take your vehicle to an auto service centre.
STEP 5: CHECK YOUR AIR SENSOR
The onboard computer is responsible to inspect and collect data on the air entering into the engine constantly. This is enabled by the mass airflow sensor, playing a key role in transferring genuine data to the car’s computer. If there is something wrong with the air sensor such as it is choked, the computer may get imputed with incorrect readings. As a result of the inaccurate data, the check engine light fails to turn on.
The easiest way to deal with this problem is to remove the mass airflow sensor and properly clean it. If the sensor is visibly broken, you must get a new one.
Although backfiring of the engine does not bring immediate damage to the car itself, it is a strong warning sign of an imminent problem that can lead to serious issues. Besides, when you wish to either buy a used car in the UAE or a new one, make sure you know how to fix a car backfire. In this way, you can help maintain your vehicle’s optimal health by scheduling regular maintenance. Moreover, you should know what causes a car to backfire, so that you can fix the issue properly.
