1. Jeep is a Byproduct of World War
The first Jeep was a byproduct of World War II. The United States government realized they had to replace the aging fleet of Model T’s with small, three-seat, lightweight, four-wheel-drive vehicles.
In 1940, the U.S. Army asked carmakers to build a quarter-ton “light reconnaissance vehicle” exclusive to the Army’s unique needs. 135 automakers were solicited, out of which only 3 responded — Bantam, Willys, and Ford.
Within a year, and with each company’s contribution, the first Jeep vehicle template came into being. It took 75 days to finish the prototype. By November 1940, it was delivered to the U.S. Army by Willys-Overland.
2. The Iconic Front Jeep Grille was Actually Ford’s Contribution
The legendary flat seven-slotted grille with integrated headlights was an essential part of the Jeep’s design, and Ford was responsible for it. In 1945, the company’s Pilot Model GP-No.1 or “Pygmy” was underway with 13 slots that were reduced to nine, and ended at seven.
3. Origin of the Jeep Name is a Mystery
The first Jeeps that were used by the Army were called Willys MA and Willys MB, but later on, the name changed to Jeep. Some believe this was a play on General Purpose Vehicle (GP), while some think it’s the name of Ford’s version, GPW; where G stood for government, P was the 80-inch distance between the wheels, and W was Willys who held the license.
