There are countless microcapsules in iX Flow’s body wrap which contain negatively charged white and positively charged black pigments. The car’s exterior has three layers with the middle layer consisting of transparent capsules and the top and bottom layers having electrodes.
When the driver clicks the button to change the colour, an electrical field is generated causing the desired colour to appear to the surface. The electrophoretic colour changing technology in BMW iX Flow Magic E Ink is similar to the one found in Kindle (e-reader) which allows the reader to choose the theme backgrounds of different colours.
In terms of energy consumption, this is highly energy efficient because switching the car’s colour consumes very little electricity and no electricity is required for the car to remain in the colour you have chosen. Although the colour variants are now limited at the moment, BMW stated that new colours will be added every year and drivers will be able to pick from a wider colour range.
It is worth mentioning that this will not be available for purchase in dealerships anywhere in the foreseeable future since it is a research project that is being currently worked upon.

Similarly, you can change the colour of your car to white to keep it cool during the summer and then switch to black to keep it warm during the winter.
For both the cases, the amount of energy used by the vehicle’s electrical system will be reduced which will thus make the car’s battery last longer on a single recharge.
