For any brand, the logo carries immense importance. Aware of the role it plays in the product’s marketing, automobile brands also strive to make sure that their emblem not only represents their mission but is also eye-catching and memorable. Volkswagen, one of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers, also has an interesting history behind its logo.
This guide will take a look at the history of the Volkswagen logo and the meaning behind VW logo design.
How Volkswagen Logo Has Changed Over the Years
Volkswagen is a German automobile manufacturing brand owned by Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft (also known as Volkswagen AG or Volkswagen Group).
Automakers strive to depict their company’s vision and mission with the car logos. In Volkswagen’s logo, the blue colour depicts quality, dependability and class whereas the white colour symbolizes nobility and charm.
Since being founded on May 28 1937, there have been 10 Volkswagen logos. Let’s dive into the details of each of the Volkswagen logos over the years.
Volkswagen Logo: 1937-1939
The initial Volkswagen emblem symbolizes the company’s origins as a “people’s car” designed to facilitate the transport of Germany’s citizens. The initials (Volks and Wagen) are positioned one above the other inside a circle. The cogwheel is a reference to the swastika which symbolizes good fortune.
Volkswagen Logo: 1939-19345
After lasting two years, the initial logo was replaced during the Second World War. The cogwheel remained in place but the company removed the cross. The initials V and W were also enlarged. This emblem stayed as Nissan’s logo for six years.
Volkswagen Logo: 1945-1960
The third Volkswagen logo remained for 15 years, becoming the longest-running Volkswagen logo. The company removed the cogwheel from the logo and the font of the initials was widened in proportion.
Volkswagen Logo: 1960-1967
Prior to this, the initials of Volkswagen were encircled in all the logos. This was changed in 1960 when Volkswagen removed the circle with a square.
Volkswagen Logo: 1967-1978
The square was only part of the logo between 1960-1967 and was removed from this logo as well as the upcoming ones. Other changes to the logo included a change in colour from black and white to blue and thinner in size.
Volkswagen Logo: 1978-1989
This logo didn’t have any significant change from the previous one. In the previous logo, the background was white and the letters were blue. In this logo, the colours were inverted in the background becoming blue and letters becoming white. The single frame in the logo was changed to the double frame.
Volkswagen Logo: 1989-2000
The logo Volkswagen used between 1989 and 2000 was identical to the one it used between 1945 and 1960 except that the black color was replaced with light blue.
Volkswagen Logo: 2000-2012
From its start until the 3rd millennium, Volkswagen had seven different logos. There have been three Volkswagen logos in the third millennium so far.
In this logo, Volkswagen adopted three-dimensionality for the first time. The blue colour in the logo was comparatively less intense and the proportions of the initials were also altered a bit.
Volkswagen Logo: 2012-2019
This emblem was more three-dimensional and smaller in size than the logo that Volkswagen used during the period between 2000 and 2012.
Volkswagen Logo: 2019-Present
For the current VW logo, Volkswagen shed three-dimensionality and adopted a two-dimensional logo again. This logo was unveiled at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in three versions: white-on-blue combination, blue-on-white and black-on-white.
