After a successful debut in 2024, the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League is back for another season. The A2RL now has broader international participation, an advanced platform and upgraded autonomous race cars. The event will be held from November 15, 2025 and has different racing series with impressive prizes for winners.
THE IDEA BEHIND THE LEAGUE
The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League was first held in April 2024, as a groundbreaking event by ASPIRE. The flagship racing series is back for another season, starting November 15, 2025 and will be held at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit.
The main objective of the event is to expand the use of artificial intelligence in self-driving cars. Moreover, A2RL is committed to promoting sustainable practices within the automotive industry. By fostering innovative and low-risk solutions, the league aims to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. It also aims to enhance safety and performance standards in both motorsports and commercial transportation.
The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Car Race 2025 will feature several high-profile autonomous races. The event also has expanded international participation, including France and Japan joining as newcomers, alongside the USA, Germany, China, Singapore, Italy and the UAE. The STEM-backed race will also include dune buggies, drones, off-roading races and Dallara-built Super Formula Cars.
A2RL has introduced the SIM-Sprint, a series of virtual races that help teams test AI driving systems more rapidly in controlled conditions. This year-round platform accelerates development beyond real-world testing, especially for handling rare ‘edge cases’ in autonomous driving. In the future, it will expand to fans, developers and aspiring teams through a tiered system: Sim Academy, Sim Pro and eventually real-world A2RL.
Initiatives at the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League
The automotive industry has witnessed a rise in autonomous vehicles in recent years. Likewise, autonomous racing has also gained ground across the globe. These vehicles are equipped with advanced features such as LiDAR technology and control systems that offer a safe ride.
Besides, apart from being a new type of car racing, autonomous racing has paved the way for new research. The use of artificial intelligence in cars, combined with new algorithms, enables cars to perceive their surroundings and manoeuvre accordingly.
In addition, the event has three different racing series, each with its unique set of features. They are as follows:
AUTONOMOUS CAR RACE
For A2RL Season 2, the EAV-24 has been transformed into the EAV-25, based on the Super Formula SF23 platform. It features major upgrades in safety, reliability and powertrain performance. To boost reliability, the engineering team improved key systems, including the steering, GNSS and 5G antennas, as well as electronics and motorsport-grade wiring looms. Safety has also been enhanced with new 12V and 48V batteries featuring an integrated management system, a secondary IMU for redundancy and a hydraulic emergency braking system.
The powertrain of the EAV-25 has been refined for better performance and efficiency. Upgrades include a smaller, more stable alternator, a redesigned fuel line to prevent leakage and shorter gearbox ratios for improved track performance. Additionally, gearbox calibration has been refined to deliver smoother shifts and progressive power delivery, ensuring speed and reliability on the track. The car weighs around 690 kg and can reach speeds of up to 300 km/h.
AUTONOMOUS DRONE RACE
The A2RL Autonomous Drone Championship is a cutting-edge AI sporting event where fully autonomous drones race at high speeds on complex tracks without any human intervention. These races challenge AI pilots to perceive, decide and adapt in real time, showcasing the limits of machine intelligence in dynamic environments.
Beyond racing, the self-driving car racing league in Abu Dhabi serves as a global testbed for research in robotics, autonomy and AI safety, with real-world applications in mobility and logistics. Open to researchers, engineers, institutions and enthusiasts worldwide, it’s a platform to innovate and demonstrate the future of AI-driven systems. In addition, those who want to join this championship for season 2 can register via the A2RL’s official website.
AUTONOMOUS DUNE BUGGY RACE
Apart from cars and drones, A2RL has introduced a new series: Dune Buggy Race. While more details are yet to be revealed, the dune buggy UGV will push the boundaries of autonomous racing. These vehicles will race across various terrains, allowing teams to further navigate the different prospects of AI on the tracks.
