Types of Car Racing
Racing has always been significant for the automotive industry. People are fascinated by the speeds different cars can attain and the driver’s skills used to outdo their opponents. To one up the racing game, different types of car racing have been introduced over the years.
Racing is as old as the car industry itself. As technology reached new heights, racing experienced many developments. Once the races begin, it is hard to keep your eyes off the track as the high-speed, high-adrenaline sport guarantees a “blink and you miss experience”.
While the aim of most car races is similar as the driver crossing the finish line is declared the winner, there are several differences between the types of racing. Major differences include the types of cars, types of terrain, and racing formats.
Let’s go through a list of the famous types of car racing and learn how they differ from each other.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF CAR RACING
The variety of cars, formats and tracks adds more attraction to these races. The popularity of the sport has made car racing reach out to different parts of the world.
The different types of car racing are listed below:
FORMULA RACING
Formula racing is perhaps the most famous type of car racing. The governing body FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) has formulated a structure where drivers have to prove themselves at certain levels to compete in the Formula 1 championship.
Formula racing has 4 main championships:
Formula racing is an open-wheel competition including cars with pointy noses and several aerodynamic aids. The engines are located right behind the driver’s seat and the low weight makes the cars faster.
While Formula 1 is the grand championship of formula racing, Formula 2 and Formula 3 serve as the feeder championships for Formula 1 respectively. Formula 1 racing allows modified cars but identical cars are used in Formula 2 and Formula 3.
Formula E is the first of its kind, an all-electric division of formula racing. All the formula races take place on arced tracks on famous circuits around the world, like the Yas Marina circuit in the UAE.
INDY CAR RACING
Indy Car Racing is also considered the American version of Formula racing. It is also an open-wheel competition with single-seater cars. Indy car races are also held on oval tracks but their races are longer than Formula racing.
While formula cars allow four engine manufacturers, indy cars allow only 2. The cars in Indy car racing can have over 700 horsepower. The extraordinary speeds put the championship among the most famous ones.
STOCK CAR RACING
As the name suggests, the race includes stock cars that come from regular manufacturers. However, modifications are made before the cars are put in races. These races are also held on oval tracks with the fastest driver taking the trophy.
What differentiates stock car racing from formula racing is the cars and the prices. Although the cars used in stock racing are modified, they are not specifically designed for racing, hence less expensive. National Stock Car Racing (NASCAR) is among the famous types of car racing followed by The Daytona 500 and Sprint Cup.
SPORTS CAR RACING
While sports car racing might not be as popular as formula racing or stock car racing, it still has an audience. Sports car racing has sports cars made specifically for racing. The cars are two-seated and unlike formula racing cars, they have enclosed wheels.
The goal of these races is not always to come first. Sometimes it is about endurance. Some sports car races can last from 2.5 to 24 hours. However, drivers make pit stops for repairs.
Some famous sports car events are the FIA World Endurance Championship and the Grand-Am Championship.
PRODUCTION CAR RACING
Production car racing also known as showroom-stock racing involves cars straight out of the showroom. Minimal or no modifications are allowed in production car racing.
The cars that take part in these races are checked thoroughly to ensure fair competition. Since there are no modifications allowed, it is one of the most economical types of car racing. Furthermore, it is also the easiest way for a driver to get into car racing.
To get into one of these races, drivers are required to have a roll cage, harness, and fire suppression system. The driver also needs to wear a safety suit, gloves, helmet, and shoes.
MONSTER TRUCK RACING
Monster truck racing is a one-of-its-kind racing involving huge trucks. The monster truck events are held inside closed arenas with custom tracks. Speed is not the deciding factor here. The driver with the guts to take on the obstacles receives the most applause.
Monster truck racing is more about stunts than anything else. Some leading energy drink brands like Redbull and Monster Energy sponsor these heavy vehicle events.
DRAG RACING
Drag racing is a non-traditional car racing type. It is different from the other car racing types. Drag racing is carried out on straight tracks and it is the most basic type of car racing.
The cars are lined up at the starting line and the car that crosses the finish line first wins. Speed is the key here and drivers use Noz and Nitro to attain maximum speed. Drag races take place on short-distance tracks which can be about 200-400 metres. Typical drag races can be completed in a matter of seconds.
There is an association for drag cars – the National Hot Rod Association, based in California, United States, but people often carry out races on their own.
TOURING CAR RACING
Touring car racing includes production cars. Car manufacturers build these custom cars to fit the driver’s needs. The race tracks in tour racing are different from those in formula racing.
Touring car races can take place through the mountains or on farmlands. The types of races can also vary from sprint races to endurance races. Few famous touring car races are the Supercars Championship and the World Touring Championship.
OFF-ROAD RACING
As the name suggests, these races take place on different terrains like dirt, sand, or even the woods. These races experience tough tracks and only skilled drivers can make it through them. In off-road racing, motorcycles, cars, and even trucks are used. Dirt bike racing can often be seen on television as well.
All these intriguing factors make off-road racing more interesting.
RALLY RACING
Rallying includes production vehicles. These races take place on closed tracks or even on public roads in some instances. The unique thing about rallying is that the races can take place in different conditions. Some rally races even take place on gravel, ice or snow. The driver finishing first is declared the winner.
This was all about the types of car racing. Racing fans can’t get enough of the different types of race cars used in these races and the thrill of witnessing these events firsthand.
