However, these glamorous vertical cityscapes have evolved rapidly and awe-inspiringly. Let’s explore each of the tallest buildings in the UAE and the period during which each held this title.
List of Tallest Buildings in the UAE Over the Years
The UAE has an enticing history of skyward development. The region’s urban progress timeline is marked by buildings that have constantly pushed the boundaries of height and design. Regulations like the Dubai Building Code and other related laws have also played a significant part in consistent and streamlined development.
The tallest buildings in Dubai over the years and other emirates have become symbols of the country’s rapid growth, ambition and world-renowned architecture. Here’s the roundup of some landmark developments in this regard.
World Trade Centre Tower (1979-1999)
Dubai’s rise as a skyscraper city began with the World Trade Centre Tower. The structure was completed in 1979. Standing at 149 metres, this 39-story building was the UAE’s tallest for nearly two decades. Though modest by today’s standards, it symbolised Dubai’s early ambitions and opened the door to the architectural wonders that followed.
Emirates Towers (1999-2008)
While ranking the tallest buildings in the UAE throughout history, the Emirates Towers comes second on the list. This vertical development emerged in 1999 to break records. At the time of its completion, the structure was towering over the skyline at 354 metres.
These twin towers represented a new era of Dubai’s development, showcasing a sleek, futuristic design. The taller office tower, in particular, became a defining landmark and paved the way for Dubai’s reputation as a global architectural powerhouse.
Burj Al Arab (1999)
Known as one of the world’s most luxurious hotels, the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab stands at 321 metres. While technically shorter than the Emirates Towers, it quickly gained fame for its unique design and luxurious appeal. Soon after its completion, the landmark became an icon of Dubai’s wealth and luxury tourism. Moreover, the hotel is built on a man-made island that stretches 280 metres into the ocean. The project put Dubai on the map, way before Palm Jumeirah, a mega coastal development completed in 2006.
The Address Downtown Dubai (2008)
Completed in 2008, The Address Downtown Dubai held its place as one of the tallest towers in Dubai. With 63 storeys, the building reached a height of 302 metres. As a well-designed project, it featured a refined, modern design that reflected Dubai’s continued growth. Enjoying the top-notch location of Downtown Dubai, it became a premier destination for luxury living and tourism near the Burj Khalifa.
