Tyres are responsible for carrying the entire weight of a vehicle and providing support and grip. They are the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road. They also provide traction and ensure safety while driving. This makes them vulnerable to issues and any issue concerning tyres should be a cause for concern. Tyres can wear out over time and experience issues. A tyre bulge is one of the most common issues. It is a deformation in the outer layer, typically the sidewall of the tyre and can be a safety hazard.
Have you noticed a bulge on the tyre? Here is all you need to know about the bulges, their causes, dangers, fixes and more.
What is a Tyre Bulge
A tyre bulge is defined as a bubble or swelling on the surface of the tyre which may be visible to the naked eye. It can be caused by several reasons including hitting curbs, high speeds, over-inflation and more. They damage the internal components of the tyre which allows air to accumulate in the interior. These tyre bulges are a huge safety risk as they can lead to tyre bursts while driving and need to be fixed immediately.
Here is a detailed overview of all you need to know about tyre bulges and how to fix them.
Causes of Tyre Bulges
Tyre bulges can be caused due to several reasons:
Driving Over Potholes on the Road
Driving over potholes, especially at high speeds can result in swelling and bulges on the tyre. Hitting a pothole at high speed can flex the tyre and cause the rubber to hit the rim. This can lead to punctures and other damage to the tyre’s interior. The interior damage then causes bulges in the tyre sidewall. This is why you should avoid potholes while driving.
Frequently Hitting Curbs
Frequently hitting curbs while parking can also cause tyre and rim damage. If the tyre sidewall comes in frequent contact with the curbs, it can result in damage to the rubber of the tyre. Moreover, the front tyres of the car are more vulnerable to damage because they are more likely to hit curbs while parking.
Driving on Rough Roads or Debris
Driving conditions play a crucial role in the performance of car tyres. Frequently driving on rough and damaged roads can damage the interior of a tyre over time. Driving over debris, gravel, glass, roadkill etc. wears down the tyre unevenly, sometimes resulting in bulges.
It is recommended to avoid driving over rough roads and debris. However, if you must drive over it, make sure to drive slowly and carefully.
Over-Inflation of Tyres
This can cause the tyre to expand more than its capacity. This results in swelling in the sidewall of the tyre. Ensure that the tyre is inflated to its capacity as there are also other disadvantages of over-inflated tyres.
Excess Load on the Car
Overloading the car can put a strain on the tyre and overstretch the rubber. This compromises the internal structure of the tyre and can lead to bulges.
Car Accidents
Any sudden impact including car accidents can inflict substantial damage to the tyre casing and cause internal damage. This results in a bulge on the tyre.
Abrupt Start or Braking
Starting the car abruptly or hard braking can overstress the tyre structure and weaken the sidewall. Once the tyre structure is compromised, it is easier for a bulge to form and affect the stability of the tyre.
Manufacturing Defects
Lastly, in rare cases, tyre bulges can occur due to manufacturing defects. Any possible issue during the manufacturing stage can allow air to escape between the layers, resulting in bulges.
Dangers of Driving with a Tyre Bulge
Tyre bulges can be extremely dangerous and increase the risk of accidents. Driving with a bulged tyre is a safety hazard as it can cause a tyre blowout. In case of a tyre blowout, the driver can lose control of the vehicle and cause damage to others, along with themself. Blown radials and other debris from a tyre blowout can also put others in harm’s way.
Additionally, driving on tyres with bulges can also result in premature wear and tear of wheel bearings. It can also damage the shock absorbers and ball bearings and loosen the car suspension.
It is recommended to stop driving the car in case of a tyre bulge and replace the damaged tyre with a spare. Driving with a bulge in the tyre can cause more bulges and rupture the existing ones. The weakened tyre will not be able to take on any more harsh conditions such as rough roads, potholes or debris and will be a safety hazard.
In case of a tyre blowout while on the road, you should know how to handle a tyre burst. In this situation, slow down the vehicle and park at a safe spot. Once the car is parked in a safe spot, drivers can replace the tyre or call roadside assistance for help.
How to Fix Tyre Bulges?
Fixing a bulge in the car tyre is never recommended. It is not possible to safely fix a tyre bulge while maintaining the structural integrity of the tyre. The tyre is no longer stable and can not bear the weight of the vehicle. No amount of repair can restore the structural damage endured by the tyre. The only course of action in this situation is to replace the tyre with a new one.
Once a bulge in the tyre is visible, immediate action should be taken to avoid unnecessary risk. Replace the tyre instantly to avoid collisions or other accidents due to tyre blowout.
Tyre Bulge Prevention Tips
Here are some tips to reduce the risk of tyre bulging:
- Do not over-inflate and regularly check the tyre pressure
- Do not overload the vehicle
- Ensure tyre rotation
- Drive slowly over potholes, debris or bumps
- Regularly inspect the tyres for any manufacturing defects or developing problems
- Avoid hitting curbs while parking
- Clean the car tyres regularly to prevent tyre damage
FAQs
How do You Fix a Bulge on a Tyre?
A tyre bulge can not be fixed safely as it is a serious safety concern. It is recommended to change the tyre to ensure safety and avoid potential accidents.
Is it Safe to Drive on a Tyre with a Bulge in it?
No, it is extremely dangerous to drive on a bulged tyre. Driving with tyre bulges can lead to tyre blowout as well as suspension damage. You should change the tyre before driving to ensure safety.
What Causes Bulges in a Tyre?
Over-inflation of tyres, driving over potholes and hitting curbs are among the list of reasons that cause bulges in tyres.
Can Tyre Bubble be Fixed?
No, a tyre bubble can not be fixed. Tyres with bubbles show that the internal structure of the tyre has been compromised. The best course of action is to replace the tyre.
