Different Types of Bicycle Tyres Explained
If you are a bicycle enthusiast, you would know everything about the anatomy of your bike – including the bicycle tyres. There are three different types of bike tyres. Let’s go through them in detail.
Different Types of Bicycle Tyres
In the following paragraphs, we define the three different types of bike tyres.

There are three different types of bicycle tyres. These tyres fit onto a wheel requiring a specific rin. Your bike’s tyres are either: clincher, tubular or tubeless and the wheel specifies which tyre is compatible with it.
Clincher Tyre

Generally, most road bikes feature clincher tyres. Such tyres require an inner tube to hold air. Unless mentioned otherwise, it is a general assumption for all new bikes to feature clincher tyres. Clincher tyres need an inner tube to inflate and hold air. Moreover, such tyres have a kevlar fiber bead or steel on the edge to hold the air in the rim.
Tubular Tyre

Another type of bike tyre is the tubular type. Just like Clincher tyres, tubulars use an inner tube but in a different manner. With tubular tyres, the inner tube is sewn directly to the tyre and is then glued directly onto the rim.
This reduces weight and is the reason why many professional racers prefer them. This enhances the rolling resistance and road feel of tubular tyres. In case a tubular tyre goes flat, they can be ridden on with relatively little risk of the tyre rolling from the rim.
The only minor drawback of tubular tyres is that extensive work is needed to apply the tyre to the rim and to replace them if they get flat. Moreover, the price of tubular tyres is also on the higher side, therefore they are suited best for dedicated bike racers.
Tubeless Tyre

Mountain bikers have been using tubeless tyres for a long time and gradually they are making their way to road bikes. Several high-end mountain trek bikes equip ‘tubeless ready’ rims.
Evident from the name, tubeless tyres work without an inner tube, instead, they are attached to an exclusive rim design that produces an airtight seal. This technology is very similar to the technology we find in modern cars and motorbikes.
Tubeless tyres are considered a notch above clincher tyres because they create less friction. This improves their rolling resistance and enables them to run at a lower pressure improving comfort, such tyres are also believed to offer better puncture protection.
For puncture prevention, tubeless tyres can be used with liquid sealant. The sealant is inserted into the tyre to help seal small punctures immediately.
That is all about the different types of bike tyres.
