8 Different Types of Traffic Radars on the UAE Roads
The UAE government ensures road safety on roads for motorists as well as pedestrians. To this end, there are various traffic signs and rules to be followed and their implementation requires monitoring. This is where traffic radars on the UAE roads enter the picture. Currently, there are different types of traffic radars installed at the signals, roads and streets in the Emirate for effective monitoring.
Let’s learn about these different traffic radars on the UAE roads in detail.
List of Radars to monitor the UAE traffic
In addition to speeding, these radars detect a plethora of other traffic violations such as jumping red lights, driving in wrong lanes, taking incorrect turns and car noise. Here is a list of all the main types of traffic monitoring radars on the UAE road:
1. Noise Sensors
Aiming to reduce noise pollution in the city, these unique radars were introduced in Abu Dhabi in 2016. The radars measure noise levels coming from cars and are used to discourage motorists from accelerating too much. Furthermore, these radars identify vehicles that are modified in a manner to disturb the residents.
These radars are usually installed near residential areas, schools, mosques and hospitals. They measure the sound in decibels and with the help of the camera take photos of the cars violating the limits, catching the anyone driving a noisy car.
2. Cameras for Red Light Violations
These cameras are usually installed at intersections all over the UAE. These cameras use infrared technology to capture photos of cars jumping red lights without a flash. The technology has been vastly improved over the years and is a massive success in catching red-light violations.
3. Bat Radar
Dubai Police introduced the bat radars in 2017 to catch motorists who violate the school bus stop signs. These radars are installed on the school bus stops where these buses pick and drop students. The radars help identify the drivers who ignore these stop signs during the pick and drop hours.
These bat radars are tiny devices that are operated via smartphones and use 3G technology to deliver images and data to the city Traffic Department.
4. The Supervisor
The Supervisor, commonly known as Al Motabea’a are a device the Dubai Police launched in 2016 to monitor and capture motorists not driving in the correct intersections and lanes. These cameras also detect wanted cars and ring an alarm to warn the command and control centre about it. This leads to the pursuit of that car.
Two such cameras are installed right before the ‘Last Exit’ on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway.
5. Standard Cameras for Speeding
Standard speeding cameras are installed in large numbers all across the UAE. They flash in case any vehicle surpasses the speeding limit. In all the emirates except Abu Dhabi, there is a buffer of 20km/h above the speed limits. This means the cameras don’t flash unless you exceed the limit plus the buffer.
Drive under these UAE speed limits to avoid the cameras flashing and charging you with a fine.
6. Hi-tech Speed Cameras
In addition to the standard cameras installed for over-speeding, these advanced speed recognition technology cameras are also installed on the UAE roads. These can monitor queue-jumping and various other dangerous types of driving habits such as jumping red lights, swerving too suddenly and driving in the long lanes along with over speeding.
7. Smart Collector
Introduced by the Dubai Police in 2017, the smart collector is a technologically advanced radar. It is a smart device with cameras moving a short distance on the road and is capable of detecting and capturing a number of traffic law violations.
It can catch such traffic offences as hard shouldering and jaywalking. The devices can read number plates, broadcast audio messages to the drivers and flash warnings about bad weather, emergencies and speed limits to the motorists.
8. Armour-plated speed cameras
These are enforcement trailer cameras developed by French electrical engineering firm Cegelec and German company Vitronic. An advanced radar technology, it allows the cameras to monitor lanes in both directions.
Moreover, these cameras are advanced enough to detect speeding, abrupt lane changes, hard shoulder overtaking, cars driving too close to each other and reading licence plates.
This is all about the various traffic radar technology in the UAE. Knowing about these radars will motivate the drivers to follow the traffic and driving rules in the UAE. This will ensure road safety and save the motorist from fines and penalties due to violations.
Now that you know about these traffic radars and how they work, driving across the Emirate is likely to feel safer. If you have been idling with the idea of investing in a vehicle, maybe it is time buy a used car in the UAE.
