Make Matters: History of Toyota Logo
Toyota, a well-known Japanese automobile manufacturer, is synonymous with durability and reliability. That said, its well-crafted design and development strategies fulfil its famous car taglines such as ‘Beyond excellence’ and ‘Touch the Perfection’. Since its inception, Toyota has expanded globally manufacturing both luxury and non-luxury cars.
The three ovals representing Toyota are quite popular. With an excellent and concise logo, the brand represents its global presence and community. However, the Toyota logo has gone through several design refreshers to date. The logo has evolved over the years, let’s explore the complete logo history of the most popular used Japanese car brand in the UAE.
TOYOTA LOGO MEANING AND HISTORY
The fact about Toyota that many are not familiar with is that the company’s original name was ‘Toyoda’ coming from the founder’s name. However, it was changed to Toyota in 1936 when the auto brand carried out a logo design competition for a new Toyota logo.
The current Toyota logo has three ovals but do you know what it means? The Toyota logo is meaningful. The overlapping inner ovals exhibit the mutual, trustful, and beneficial relationship between the customer and company. Moreover, the overlapping ovals form a T for the first letter of Toyota, and the outer oval represents the brand’s global presence.
Let’s understand the evolution of the Toyota logo over the years to find a perfect graphical representation of the brand’s culture and core values.
1935: INITIAL DESIGN
When Toyota started manufacturing vehicles, the first logo was quite simple exhibiting a shape similar to a diamond representing durability and simplicity. Sans-serif font was used for displaying the company name, Toyoda in uppercase. Moreover, the colour of the logo was red and black. The red colour symbolises passion and was also associated with Japanese culture while black was for the brand’s elegance.
1949: JAPANESE VERSION OF THE TOYOTA LOGO
Soon after the first Toyota logo, the company’s name changed to Toyota from Toyoda. Thanks to the logo contest, the auto brand chose a new logo. In this logo, encircled Japanese Katakana letters symbolised the community and completeness. Besides, the red circle referred to the Japanese flag and the sun.
1958-1989: A SIMPLE DESIGN
In 1958, Toyota introduced a simple logo for the American market. The logo was a simple text of the company name in black colour. Moreover, the text font was similar to Times New Roman.
The Toyota logo font saw a change in 1969. This time the font was similar to Hyper Sans Heavy, and the space between the letters narrowed. In the 1970s, the colour palette changed from black to red and white with more balanced lines. The logo font was similar to a Sans-Serif typeface. This logo featured bold text and continues till today with overlapping three ovals.
1989-2019: A NEW DESIGN
As mentioned above, the three-oval emblem has several meanings with one being the most obvious that it is formed from every letter of the company’s name. The other meaning is the global trust perfectly exhibiting its famous car slogan ‘Choice Of Trust‘. This logo had the company’s name on the right side of the iconic emblem. That said, the font was similar to the previous logo.
In 2005, there was a slight design change in the logo. The three ovals were in a 3-dimensional shape with the company’s name below. It was a famous redesign of the Toyota logo and the 3D emblem in gradient silver colour featured on the Toyota models.
In 2019, the logo went through yet another redesign. The emblem was placed in a red rectangle with the typeface on its right side. Although the font was the same as the previous logo versions, the logo looked more stylish with the addition of red colour.
2020: DESIGN REFRESHER
The current Toyota logo design only features its emblem in monochrome, removing the text part. Moreover, the contours of the ovals were redefined without changing the conciseness of the logo.
TOYOTA EMBLEMS
In the earlier years, Toyota used the two types of emblems, one for cars and the other for trucks. The emblem used on cars had a kanji mark with a wing representing the speed. Moreover, the truck emblem came with a kanji mark alongside a tiger head and carp body representing the city it originated in.
However, the current three ovals Toyota car logo has become an official emblem since 1989. Furthermore, Toyota uses various emblems and logos for its specific car models. For instance, the Toyota Crown logo is different as it represents a crown. Toyota has used the same emblem on all the Crown models.
That wraps the history of one of the iconic logos in the automotive industry. If you are a fan of this Japanese auto brand, you can find its popular car models in used Toyotas for sale in the UAE. Besides, you can explore multiple other options in the listings of used cars for sale in the UAE.
