The Tesla Valet Mode stemmed from a mishap involving a Model S owner’s vehicle when a valet attempted to experiment with the Cheetah mode. This joyride turned disastrous when the car hit a concrete wall, as captured by the vehicle’s dashcam. In response to this incident, Tesla implemented valet mode, equipped with a suite of robust safety and privacy features accessible via a dedicated valet key.
Before Tesla’s innovation, various luxury automakers had devised methods to safeguard against valet-induced damage and unauthorised access to personal data. Some carmakers offered valet keys that limited speed, acceleration and glove box access.Despite improving safety and privacy, physical valet keys were inconvenient and prone to loss or theft.
In contrast, Tesla’s Valet Mode, a more advanced solution, prevents reckless driving and protects owner data. Introduced in 2015 through an over-the-air software update, Valet Mode showcases Tesla’s dedication to innovation and customer needs.
Everything Valet Mode Does
Once the Tesla Valet Mode is activated, the vehicle’s operating system imposes restrictions on various functions. For example, it limits the car’s maximum speed to 113 km/h (70mph), reduces acceleration by approximately 50 percent and disables the use of Tesla autopilot.
Beyond safety, Valet Mode adds security and privacy features like automatically locking the glove box and frunk. Moreover, it ensures the user’s information remains private by preventing certain personal data from being displayed on the screen. As a result, details including addresses, contact and schedule information are kept entirely confidential.
Furthermore, Valet Mode deactivates Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and navigation functionalities.
Valet Mode Restrictions
As for the Tesla Valet Mode mode working, it restricts certain features. They are as follows:
• Maximum speed is capped at approximately 113 kmph or 70 mph.
• Acceleration is limited to the ‘Chill’ setting.
• The front trunk and glove box are locked, while the trunk remains accessible.
• Voice commands are disabled.
• Navigation is deactivated, preventing access to recent destinations, favourites and home/work addresses.
• Autopilot/FSD functionality is disabled. This functionality is also disabled when using the Tesla’s track mode feature for safety.
• The ‘Allow Mobile Access’ setting cannot be altered.
• HomeLink (if applicable) functionality is unavailable.
• Driver profiles cannot be accessed.
• The touch screen does not display the list of authorised keys for accessing the car.
• Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are deactivated, and device addition/viewing is prohibited.
• Sentry Mode settings cannot be adjusted (if active, it cannot be turned off).
• Smart Summon functionality is disabled.
• Calendar access is not available.
• The “Upgrades” section in Controls > Upgrades is disabled.
The valet mode in Tesla is exclusive to certain performance models, with Smart Summon also being inaccessible while Valet Mode is active. However, if a Tesla is parked in valet mode, drivers can deactivate it using the Tesla app and proceed to use Smart Summon to start their car.
Impact of Tesla Valet Mode on Vehicle Charging
Given that the Tesla Valet Mode limits certain features to safeguard the vehicle and the privacy of its occupants, it doesn’t impose any limitations on the vehicle’s charging capability. This proves beneficial when visiting a valet location equipped with charging facilities.
The valet can conveniently plug in your Tesla for charging while it’s parked, ensuring it remains charged and ready for use. Besides, those who own Tesla vehicles can go through these Tesla charging stations in the UAE.
Speed Limit With Tesla Valet Mode
As mentioned above, the speed limit is capped at 70 mph when the valet mode is enabled. Nonetheless, drivers have the option to tailor this limit to their liking through ‘Speed Limit Mode.’ This feature allows users to establish a personalized maximum speed by activating Speed Limit Mode and generating a 4-digit PIN in the safety settings.
Once set, the maximum speed remains fixed unless altered using the PIN. Users can adjust this setting either directly in the car or within the Security section of the Tesla app.
How to Use Tesla’s Valet Mode
Valet Mode can be activated either directly from the car or through the mobile app. To activate it from the vehicle, users simply need to tap their profile name on the display screen, a menu will be dropped down. From there, they can select the ‘Valet Mode’ tab. This will then lead to a prompt for inserting the four-digit PIN, to enable the Tesla Valet Mode.
Once the PIN is entered, the screen will confirm that Valet Mode has been successfully enabled. Users can also utilise the mobile app to toggle Tesla Valet Mode on and off, provided the vehicle is parked, by navigating to ‘Security’ and then selecting ‘Valet Mode.’
PIN to Drive
Throughout Tesla history safety has always been a top priority. This is why a PIN is necessary to activate the valet mode. When drivers utilise the PIN to Drive, an extra layer of security mandates them to input a valid PIN code to initiate the car. However, this feature is deactivated when the car is in Valet Mode. Once Valet Mode is activated, drivers are prompted to enter their PIN to Drive code. Once entered, this code is stored and eliminates the need for the valet driver to input a PIN to start the car.
Teen Drivers
The Tesla Valet Mode serves as a valuable tool when allowing teenagers to drive. It prevents them from speeding or accessing functionalities that may pose risks to inexperienced drivers. These restricted features include utilising the car’s full acceleration and engaging Autopilot.
It’s important to note that none of Tesla’s safety features are disabled while Valet Mode is active.
For those who still want access to navigation, music and other features, they can opt to enable Speed Limit Mode according to their preferences. While Tesla cars are known for their thrilling driving experience, it’s crucial to use features like instant torque, rapid acceleration and Autopilot responsibly with permission.
Given Tesla’s capability for high speeds and quick acceleration, using the Valet Mode is a wise decision. The more powerful the car’s performance, the higher the risk of accidents when entrusted to a valet driver.
Tesla owners can rest assured knowing that Tesla Valet Mode can mitigate speeding and reckless driving, while also safeguarding their privacy when someone else is at the wheel.
