More About the Concept of Takumi
The concept of Takumi originates from Japan and refers to master artisans who dedicate a good part of their lives to perfecting the craft. A Takumi is a skilled artisan who executes precision, patience and pursuit of excellence. The philosophy values deep expertise, attention to the smallest details and a commitment to quality over speed or mass production. In fact, a Takumi master is someone who is defined by 60,000 hours of practice, which is more than 30 years of dedication. It is a standard that ensures unmatched mastery and sets their work apart.
What is Takumi Craftsmanship in Lexus Cars?
Takumi craftsmanship in Lexus cars represents a tradition deeply rooted in Japanese culture. It is defined by precision, patience and mastery in every detail of the vehicle. Lexus employs a team of highly skilled artisans, known as Takumi, who are considered masters of their craft after decades of training and practice.
According to the history of Lexus, Takumi craftsmanship was initially reserved for select models. It was where master artisans applied their decades of expertise by hand. Over time, as car production processes advanced, elements of this craftsmanship were carefully programmed into machines to achieve the same level of precision and quality in mass-produced vehicles. This blend of human mastery and technological innovation made Takumi standards more accessible across the Lexus line-up.
Aspects of Japanese Takumi Craftsmanship in Lexus Models
Various aspects of Takumi Craftsmanship are highlighted through the overall presence of Lexus cars. The influence of the Japanese design philosophy with attention to detail extends from interior to exterior. Some of the noteworthy aspects of Takumi Craftsmanship found in Lexus vehicles include:
Shimamoku Ornamentation
Shimamoku wood ornamentation takes 38 days and 67 specialised stages to produce. Thin sheets of agathis wood are layered, shaped, polished and varnished by hand.
The Spindle Grille
The Lexus spindle grille is developed through hundreds of drawings and clay models. Each part is sculpted and positioned with extreme precision.
Diamond-Cut Forged Wheels
Forged wheels are crafted by 300 experts using aluminium billet pressed under 9,000 metric tons. Diamond blades shave the wheels for a sharp, smooth finish.
Sashiko Quilting
Sashiko quilting uses up to 10 stitches per inch, a method rooted in Japanese embroidery. Lexus combines this with computational mapping for precise perforation patterns.
Structural Blue
Inspired by the morpho butterfly, Structural Blue is created using nanostructures that reflect light. The pigment produces shifting shades of blue from different angles.
Kiriko Glass Ornamentation
Kiriko glass is hand-cut and polished to achieve delicate lines and a soft glow. Designers studied light reflections to enhance their visual effect in vehicles.
Origami-Inspired Pleats
Origami-inspired pleats are hand-folded into three-dimensional geometric patterns. They decorate the car doors, contrasting with the kiriko glass ornamentation.
Washi Paper Grain Dashboard
The UX dashboard design is inspired by Japanese washi paper. This material is traditionally used in shoji screens for a calm and warm ambience.
The availability of the aforementioned aspects of Takumi Craftsmanship in Lexus vehicles may vary according to the model and trim.
The Purpose of the Takumi Tradition in Lexus Vehicles
The Takumi tradition in Lexus vehicles helps ensure that the human element remains central to production. Unlike conventional upholstery production, where machines are used, Lexus Takumi interior crafting depends on artisans who use refined skills and senses to detect subtle imperfections in texture or appearance. This approach is rooted in the Lexus craftsmanship heritage from Japan, which values time-honoured skills alongside modern engineering.
