Why Is My Power Window Not Working
Power windows are responsible for raising and lowering the windows through a button. However, just like other car parts, the electrical system that makes the windows go up and down can also fail or simply stop working. If the power windows are not working, you won’t be able to open or close your windows until the repairs are made.
We have compiled a list of some of the common reasons why your car power window switches are not working properly.
Reasons Why Car Power Windows Are Not Working
There are several reasons why your power windows are not working. Here are some reasons that you should know in case the car power window switch stops working.
Window Lock Button Activated
One of the common reasons why your car’s power windows are not working is because the lock button on the driver’s door is activated. This button is a security feature that disables all other window switches in the vehicle until the button is pressed again. Thus, if the windows do not go up or down, check that the lock button is not activated.
Defective Regulators
The mechanism that allows a power window to move up or down is called a window regulator. Every car door with a power window has a regulator to move the window.
If the slider is not working properly, pressing the button up or down will not move the window. In this case, you will need to replace the controller. Several parts can break on a regulator. In this case, the regulator will need to be repaired or replaced.
Defective Fuse
If none of the power windows work, chances are the problem is a blown fuse or a bad relay. Although they are two separate problems, the symptoms are often very similar. A full inspection of the fuses and car computer system, will be needed to determine where the problem is and how to fix it.
Damaged Window Motor
Each window regulator requires a motor for the power supply. There is a mechanism at the end of the power window motor that connects to the window regulator.
When you press the button to open or close the window, this operation activates the window motor which then allows the regulator to move the window. If you have a faulty electric window motor then there will be no power to move the glass.
Bad Wiring
Wiring is integral to the operation of power windows and if there is a short circuit, a faulty switch or a faulty relay, it can cause the entire system to shut down. A professional should take care of wiring issues. Bad wiring can also make your car alarm keeps going off.
Worn Window Switch
The power window switch is used often and can eventually wear out, preventing power from going to the window. In this case, the window may become stuck in the up or down position. Hence, always follow a car maintenance checklist to avoid such situations in future.
Broken Window Marks
There are window guides that hold the window in place as it goes up and down. If the tracks are damaged, it can cause problems with raising and lowering the window. The most common symptoms are slow window movement and a rattling or creaking noise. The window may end up falling inside the door.
Broken Down Engine
If the window continues to move up and down but very slowly, the electric motor may be faulty. If the motor makes a sound, that could also indicate a problem. As the motor ages, it will wear out and eventually need to be replaced.
