History of the Porsche Logo
The Porsche logo speaks volumes about its identity. The previous Porsche logo was pretty different from today’s logo. That said, many elements have remained the same throughout the years. All iterations of the Porsche crest received updates with a focus on showcasing historical power, timeless elegance and beauty.
As Porsche history has it, its logo is based on the State of Württemberg’s coat of arms. This clarifies the shape of a crest. This was a representation of loyalty and fearlessness. Moreover, the Porsche headquarters were located in Stuttgart – the capital of Württemberg.
Then after the formation of West Germany in 1952, Württemberg-Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern combined into the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg.
Württemberg’s previous coat of arms is Porsche’s logo and an essential part of Germany’s history.
The animal car logo has on the crest is a pouncing horse paying homage to its history. Case in point: Porsche’s headquarters was based in Stuttgart, southwest Germany. This location was built atop a horse-breeding farm. Stuttgart also used horses in its city seal. This inspired Porsche to keep a black horse at the centrepiece of its logo representing the power and the seal of Stuttgart.
As for the antlers, and black and red lines, they were inspired by Württemberg’s state seal. The state colours are black and red. The logo design for the Porsche also honoured Swabia – the second place of residence for the auto manufacturer.
Porsche Logo over the Years
Porsche’s logo first appeared almost two decades after the company was registered. Let’s go through the evolution of the Porsche logo over the years.
1922-1938
The journey for Porsche’s initial logo started before the company was even officially created. When the brand was originally established in Stuttgart, it adopted the crest of Wurttemberg which was an existing crest as its official emblem.
As mentioned earlier, Stuttgart city was popular for its horse farms. Whereas, the coat of arms for Wurttemberg was depicted via a crest shield with two deers on each side.
This inspired Porsche and its logo’s central shield features the same red and black stripes, moreover, the sections with three antlers are still there in the Porsche logo today.
1938-1948
Later on, an alternative coat of arms for the Stuttgart region was introduced. This clearly inspired Posche again. In 1945, the logo was introduced with a coat of arms for Wurttemberg.
The shield of Stuttgart features a black horse standing against a yellow background. The shield was simply the quartered image with red and black stripes, and then the two sections featured a set of three antlers.
During this time period, the antlers became progressively smaller from top to bottom.
1948-1952
The first ideas for the new Porsche crest began from 1952. At this point in time, a sketch was developed for the potential Porsche symbol, similar to the present logo.
This image again featured the Stuttgart coat of arms shield overlaid on top of the Wurttemberg coat of arms. But this time around, it also had the brand name ,“Porsche” mentioned in sans-serif capitals font at the top of the shield.
1952-1963
The Porsche logo was then updated to a more regal looking logo with a gold, red, and black colour scheme. Gold colour replaced the yellow colour of the previous depictions. The colour was changed from yellow to gold to make the Porsche logo look modern and professionally-made, demonstrating ideas of luxury and performance.
1963-2014
Fast forward to the present, the Porsche logo used up until 2022 had Porsche written in the same sans serif font in capital letter with the word “Stuttgart ”. As for the prancing horse it was designed more elegantly, placed in the middle against a golden backdrop.
While the four segments covering this middle part consists of red and white stripes and antlers.
2023 Onwards
In the latest logo, the bronze area of the crest received a smoother finish with a new honeycomb pattern, reminiscent of a carbon-fiber weave for the red section. The smoothing gives more emphasis to the term “Porsche” appearing on the top of the logo.
The word “Stuttgart” appears in black in the centre of the crest. This updated logo will be adapted as a new brand identity to all vehicle from 8 June 2023, at the 75th Porsche sports car anniversary show.
