An automotive design is based on various aesthetic and structural elements that ensure functionality and safety. From headlights to sunroof and wheelbase, every element plays a crucial role. Structural characteristics that often go unnoticed are car overhangs. From the length of the vehicle to its overall functionality, overhangs in cars are important in various aspects. Let’s find out more about these crucial exterior elements.
What is Overhang in a Car?
An overhang refers to the portion of the vehicle’s body that extends beyond the car’s wheelbase. The wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear axles. Conversely, the overhang is measured from the centre of the wheel to the outermost part of the car’s front or rear.
Overhangs in Cars Meaning and Types
Now, that we know what overhang in cars means, let’s learn more about their types. Did you know car overhangs are divided into two types? Here’s more about their differences.
Front Overhang
The distance from the front axle to the front bumper. It is often ornamented with black or chrome trims, depending on the car’s make and model.
Rear Overhang
The distance from the rear axle to the rear bumper. This particular exterior section of the car has a lean or sculpted shape, depending on the car’s type and design.
Importance of Overhangs in Cars
Overhangs in vehicles have evolved through the history of automotive designs and so has its importance. Here are some of the key factors emphasising its functionality and usage.
Aesthetics
Overhangs contribute to the car’s overall design and appearance. Cars with shorter overhangs often have a sportier look. Similarly, longer overhangs can provide a more luxurious or classic appearance.
Performance
Shorter overhangs can improve handling and manoeuvrability, especially in different types of sports cars. Longer overhangs may negatively impact agility but can contribute to a smoother ride by increasing the car’s stability at higher speeds.
Practicality
Vehicles with longer rear overhangs, such as station wagons or SUVs, tend to have more cargo space. However, long overhangs can be a disadvantage in terms of ground clearance, especially on uneven terrains or steep inclines.
Safety
Overhangs can affect a car’s crash safety profile, especially in frontal collisions, as they determine the space available for crumple zones to absorb impact.
Length of Overhang and Car Angles
Here’s how the length of overhangs impacts car angles when driving on a hill or on other terrains. We’ll detail both approach and departure angles.
Approach Angle
The approach angle is the maximum angle a car can ascend or descend without its front overhang hitting the ground. A shorter front overhang improves this angle and allows the vehicle to tackle steep inclines, obstacles or ramps without scraping the front bumper. This is especially important for off-roading. Off-road vehicles require higher approach angles for better ground clearance.
Departure Angle
The departure angle is the maximum angle a car can descend or move backwards over an obstacle without the rear overhang scraping the ground. A shorter rear overhang results in a better departure angle. As a result, SUVs and trucks can steer through steep descents and rough terrains without damaging the rear bumper. Such structural elements play a crucial role in different types of off-roading terrain to keep a vehicle’s exterior safe from potential damage.
FAQs
Is overhang an important part of the vehicle?
Yes. An overhang impacts a vehicle’s performance in various aspects. From enhancing the car aerodynamics to approach and departure angles, overhangs have different functionalities.
Does Porshe 911 have its engine in the rear overhang?
Yes. One of the interesting facts about the Porsche 911 is that its engine has been mounted in the rear overhang.
Are rocker panels and overhangs the same in cars?
No, the car rocker panel and overhang are not the same. The rocker panel is the part beneath the doors, while overhang refers to the sections of the car extending beyond the front and rear wheels.
This is everything you need to know about overhangs in cars and their importance. It is also important to note that the length of such structural elements also impacts the car’s overall weight. There are different types of car weights that can impact the overall vehicular performance, safety and manoeuvrability.
