Car History: Nissan Z
The automotive industry has seen the introduction of several brands. Many of the brands went on to become giants of the industry while several failed to make an impact and went into oblivion. Some brands stood against all odds and have stayed in business for decades. One such brand is Nissan. Since 1933, the brand has produced high-tech vehicles and has expanded its horizons by stepping into the racing arena too.
In its decades-old journey, Nissan has given its customers many iconic vehicles. Nissan Z, for instance, is a shining example of the brand striking gold. We will go through the Nissan Z history, the generations, and see how the vehicle has evolved over the years.
Nissan Vehicles in the UAE
Several vehicles introduced by Nissan have made rounds around the globe. As per the luxury pre-owned cars market report, Nissan Patrol was the most popular used SUV. Besides the Nissan Patrol, several other models also attained noticeable positions in the luxury and non-luxury segments.
While SUVs are well-known for their off-roading capabilities, sedans and other body types are not far behind. Nissan Z, for instance, is among the most recognisable models launched by the brand. The history of Nissan Z has seen the introduction of 7 generations – depicting the success of the model.
Nissan Z History
The Nissan Z history started in 1970 and the popularity of the sports car has seen the vehicle go through some major changes with time. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and learn all about the history of Nissan Z and its generations and see how the vehicle has evolved over the years.
NISSAN Z FIRST GENERATION – 1970 TO 1978
The first generation Z was introduced in 1969 as a 1970 model. Known as Datsun 240Z, the model was introduced to compete with the likes of Toyota’s 2000 GT sports car. The two-door, two-seat sports car came with a rear drive.
The 2.4-litre engine with a 6-speed transmission was able to produce 151 horsepower and had a maximum speed of about 201 kilometres per hour. Production of 240Z stopped in 1973 and 260Z was introduced in 1974.
For the new model, a 2.6-litre engine was used and horsepower was increased to 165. The exterior also received an upgrade with new tail lights, a longer wheelbase and a larger bumper. The Nissan Z history also saw the introduction of Bosch electronic fuel injection. The 260Z was available in both long and short wheelbases.
NISSAN Z SECOND GENERATION – 1979 TO 1983
In 1979, the second generation Nissan Z was introduced. The new 280ZX was more of a grand touring vehicle than a sports car. The new model was larger compared to the predecessors and more luxuriously appointed. Taller gearing and more weight in the 2+2 variant affected the model’s acceleration.
The new model was available in a T-Top style roof. In 1981, a turbo variant was introduced which tackled the acceleration issue. The 2.8-litre turbo engine could produce 180 horsepower and about 275 NM torque. The turbo engine also enabled the vehicle to reach from 0 to about 100 kilometres per hour in an impressive 7.4 seconds.
NISSAN Z THIRD GENERATION – 1984 TO 1989
The Nissan Z history saw the introduction of the third generation model in 1984. Nissan focused heavily on aesthetics with a less curvaceous body design and a more aerodynamic nose. Additionally, the model was available in two seats and a 2+2 configuration.
The introduction of the V6 engine was another highlight of the third generation. The transmission options included a 5-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. The third generation also modernised the Nissan Z with an optional computerised vocal alert system.
For the third generation, a special 50th-anniversary special edition was also introduced. Available in two-tone silver and black, the special edition had adjustable dampers, unique leather seats and a digitally styled dashboard.
NISSAN Z FOURTH GENERATION – 1989 TO 2003
The fourth generation Nissan Z focused on enhanced performance and a redesigned body. Nissan Z received the biggest upgrade in the fourth generation. The new Z32 300ZX received a new slippery bodywork, a T-Top roof and fixed headlights.
The wheelbase was made even longer in the new model. Nissan stuck with the 3.0-litre V6 engine which produced 222 horsepower. A twin-turbo engine was also introduced for speed enthusiasts which produced 300 horsepower. Another major step in the Nissan Z history was the 1993 model which was available as a convertible.
NISSAN Z FIFTH GENERATION – 2003 TO 2008
The fifth generation Nissan Z was introduced in 2003 with further advancements. The model was available with a 3.5-litre V6 engine capable of producing 287 horsepower and about 374 NM torque.
The fifth generation model was available in 5-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions. The new model was available in five trim levels Base which is listed as follows:
- Base
- Enthusiast
- Performance
- Touring
- Track
The latter trim levels included features like a traction control system, limited slip differential, Brembo brakes and 18-inch wheels among many more.
NISSAN Z SIXTH GENERATION – 2009 TO 2022
The sixth generation of Nissan Z was somewhat similar to the previous generations but this time Nissan used lightweight materials. The V6 engine was able to produce 332 horsepower and about 366 NM torque.
A 40th-anniversary special edition was also introduced for celebrating the models’ legacy. Some of the major highlights of the special edition included:
- Front and rear spoilers
- Sports brakes including red callipers
- Unique graphite paint
- 19-inch Ray wheels
In 2009 a special 50th-anniversary edition was also introduced with Alcantara car upholstery, special graphics and Ray wheels.
NISSAN Z SEVENTH GENERATION – 2009 TO 2022

The seventh generation has a luxurious interior and exterior and an enhanced infotainment system. The seventh generation is available for purchase for buyers.
This was everything about the Nissan Z history. The popularity of the sports car has seen the introduction of seven generations and the model has received major upgrades with each model.
