Everything You Need to Know About Different Types of Motorcycle Frames
A chassis frame is the fundamental element for any vehicle, be it a car or a motorcycle. Different motorcycle frame types are indicative of the performance and cost factors. Motorcycle chassis design and materials add to the strength and stability parameters of a motorbike. Different types of materials are used in motorbike frames to make it lightweight and enhance the rigidity of the motorcycles.
Here are all the motorcycle frame types explained along with different materials used for their construction:
MATERIALS USED IN MOTORCYCLE FRAMES
The motorcycle frame types use different types of materials that enhance the strength, rigidity, performance and cost of the motorbikes. Mainly two types of materials are used for manufacturing motorcycle chassis:
- Alloys of Steel and Aluminium
- Exotic materials
ALLOYS OF STEEL AND ALUMINIUM
Steel can be used in different types of motorcycle chassis to make it stronger and cost-effective. However, modern requirements of motorcycle riders require lightweight materials to enhance the aerodynamic drag for a speed ride. Aluminium alloys provide lightweight and strength to the chassis but they are more expensive than steel alloys. Moreover, aluminium adds to the performance factor of most regular and mainstream motorcycles.
EXOTIC MATERIALS
Modern motorcycles used in racing require even lighter and stiffer materials than aluminium alloy. Different motorcycle frame types use exotic materials such as carbon fibre, titanium, magnesium or some mixed new material. Motorcycles used in MotoGP have this exotic material used in their frames.
MOTORCYCLE FRAME TYPES
Different constructions of chassis frames have different utility such as torsional stiffness, lightweight, cost and performance factors.
Today, we will find out about different motorcycle frame types and their benefits:
BACKBONE FRAME
This is one of the economical motorcycle frame types using less amount of steel and used in low priced motorcycles. Backbone frame is cost-effective but it lacks torsional strength. It is suitable for motorcycles with smaller engines.
SINGLE CRADLE FRAME
The single cradle motorcycle frame looks like a bicycle frame. Moreover, It is one of the basic and cost-effective motorcycle frame types. It is known as a single cradle because of the single down tube. It is similar to a backbone frame and can’t be used in performance motorcycle chassis.
DOUBLE CRADLE FRAME
This type of motorcycle frame has two tubes to support the engine. It is more beneficial than the single cradle motorcycle frame because of its high torsional rigidity and strength. This is one of the old and outdated motorcycle frame types and can’t be used in modern motorbikes.
PERIMETER FRAME
It is one of the common motorcycle frame types. Perimeter frame is used in high-performance sports motorbikes. It has improved rigidity and strength to hold the engine. Manufacturers used steel at first but to reduce the weight and improve the performance of the motorcycles, aluminium has taken the place of steel. Perimeter motorcycle frame is also known as twin-spar frames as it has two beams joining the steering handle with a swing arm.
TRELLIS FRAME
The trellis frame is quite similar to the perimeter motorcycle frame in terms of its steering handle joining with the swing arm. Apart from that perimeter frame uses aluminium beams but the trellis frame uses small aluminium or steel tubes welded together.
Trellis motorcycle frame is an improved version of the perimeter motorcycle chassis providing better rigidity, strength, stability and performance. Moreover, this motorcycle frame type is simpler to manufacture but it is more expensive.
MONOCOQUE FRAME
The monocoque frame is used mostly in cars. They are mainly manufactured in automated batches. This is a single unit for a motorcycle and is one of the most expensive motorcycle frame types. They are used in hyperbikes and high-performance motorcycles providing high strength and torsional rigidity. It uses exotic materials to make it lightweight and enhance the performance of motorbikes.
