Coachbuilders have long been celebrated in the automotive industry for their craftsmanship. Their seamless blend of luxury, individuality, and artistry results in exceptional car bodies. In the early days, manufacturers supplied rolling chassis to the coachbuilders, who custom-built each car’s body according to the owner’s preference. However, with the introduction of monocoque structures and the demand for mass production, coachbuilders began to fade. While the traditional coachbuilders have dwindled, few remain in the market.
Let’s find out whether coachbuilders are still available in the market or not.
Modern Coachbuilders: Keeping the Legacy Alive
The coachbuilders peaked during the post-war era, catering to the customers of high-end automobile brands. Throughout the history of Rolls-Royce and other luxury brands, coachbuilders have played a major role. However, the post-war crises, technological adoption and the need for mass-produced cars have declined the demand for coachbuilders.
Coachbuilders have remained subtle for almost a century. Only a few worldwide continued the legacy until the new millennium. In recent decades, the demand for custom-built vehicles has increased, leading to the revival of coachbuilders. The practices of modern coachbuilders are different from those of traditional ones, combining modifications, new-car customisation, and classic car restoration.
