History of Mercedes-Benz A-Class Models
Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a subcompact car series also nicknamed ‘Baby Benz’. Originally, the series was launched as a hatchback. Later, other body types were also introduced.
Here are the complete details regarding the journey of Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
First Generation (1997 to 2004)
W168 I (1997 to 2001)
The first generation A-Class was a five-seater compact car suitable for driving through heavy traffic. The five-door hatchback was powered by a 4-cylinder inline engine that provides a top speed of 167 km/h.
The car was designed on a 95.4-inch wheelbase with a total cargo capacity of 391-litre. For better ride quality coil spring suspension and an electric steering system was also offered in the first-generation A-Class.
W168 II (2001 to 2004)
The W168 II A-Class was built on a longer 102.1-inch wheelbase to increase its Moose test score. It was a facelift of the first generation with redesigned front bumpers, taillights and headlights.
No changes were observed in the engine. A similar 4-cylinder inline engine was used, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission system. For the second-generation, safety was enhanced by installing disc brakes (front), drum brakes (rear) and anti-roll bars.
Second Generation (2004 to 2012)
W169 I (2004 to 2007)
The second generation can be considered an evolution of the Mercedes-Benz A-class. It was unveiled with a redesigned exterior; a signature grille was introduced at the front with the Mercedes-Benz logo placed in the centre.
Moreover, older headlights were replaced with swept-back sharp edges headlamps. Taillights were installed at the rear end of the arched roof.
A wide range of engines was offered in the third generation, including a 4-cylinder inline engine. The 2WD drivetrain system was paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission system.
W169 II (2008 to 2012)
The W169 II A-class was unveiled with more refined features in comparison to its predecessor. The exterior receives a facelift with redesigned contours, bumpers and headlights. Whereas, new one0bar taillights were also introduced. For the driver’s convenience, a start-stop function and automatic parallel parking feature were installed.
The interior was refined with a new infotainment system, redesigned control panel and crash-responsive emergency lighting system. However, no major changes were observed in the engine and transmission system.
Third Generation (2012 to 2018)
W176 I (2012 to 2015)
The third generation was built on a new platform and was completely redesigned to cater to the shifting automotive standards. For the first time in the Mercedes-Benz A-Class history, the basic hatchback boxy shape of the car was replaced with an advanced hatchback similar to a crossover. Therefore, the car seems to have no connection with the Mercedes A-Class old models. The cabin environment was completely changed by installing ambient lighting, race-inspired seats, round air vents and a floating infotainment system.
Vehicle handling was also increased by an independent suspension system, electromechanical power steering and disc brakes. The car was powered by a 4-cylinder engine coupled with a 7-speed automatic transmission system.
W176 II (2015 to 2018)
The second phase of the third generation W176 II was launched in 2015. The car was equipped with a turbocharged 4-cylinder inline engine that can provide a maximum speed of 215 km/h. This FWD car was paired with a 6-speed manual transmission system.
