KIA CARNIVAL GENERATIONS
A known fact about Kia is that it is the largest and oldest manufacturer of vehicles in South Korea. That said, the brand has launched models in different car categories. Catering to various requirements, Kia introduced a minivan in 1998. The car was designed to compete with other minivans in the market. It was introduced as Carnival/Sedona for different markets.
Let’s go through the history of Kia Carnival and how it evolved in the current generation.
KIA CARNIVAL FIRST GENERATION (1998-2006)
Kia rolled out the first Carnival/Sedona in 1998. However, the model was refreshed in 2002 and launched in the markets.
The first generation of Kia Carnival adorned a minimal front fascia with a slid-down hood and matching car grille. The sliding doors had body-coloured handles. New tail lights were installed which were more prominent and flattened from the upper side.
The interior of the Carnival provided a seating of seven to eight passengers. It was one of the key features that made it a popular family car. The door, door panels and steering wheel featured wood trims while the car upholstery was upgraded. Moreover, the front seat row was divided by a centre console.
These Carnival models drew power from a 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 195 horsepower. It was paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Later on, a five-speed manual transmission was also introduced for the engine.
KIA CARNIVAL SECOND GENERATION (2006-2015)
Kia rolled out the second generation of Carnival in 2005, while a short-wheelbase version was introduced in 2007.
The front fascia featured a body-coloured grille and swept-back headlights. The minivan also consisted of electronic rear doors for the entrance of rear seat passengers. The overall look of the vehicle was redesigned to make it more modern than its predecessor.
The seating for the second-generation Carnival remained up to eight passengers. Leather upholstery was introduced in place of cloth, adding to the quality of the interior. For rear-seat passengers, Kia equipped the minivan with a DVD rear-entertainment system mounted on the ceiling. Also, the third seating row was made spacious, providing more legroom.
The Carnival was powered by a 3.6-litre DOHC V6 engine. It generated 224 horsepower. The engine was mated with a five-speed automatic transmission. For the shorter wheel-base version, the engine options included:
- A 2.7-litre V6 engine producing 189 hp. It came paired with a five-speed automatic or manual transmission.

KIA CARNIVAL THIRD GENERATION (2015-2018)
The third generation of the Kia Carnival history rolled out in 2015, with an enhanced exterior and modern car features. The car was built on a crossover-utility vehicle platform.
The front fascia featured angular-cut headlights with LED parking and foglights. Besides, the exterior of Carnival/Sedona was enhanced by Kia’s signature car grille– the tiger nose. Access to the middle and rear-seat rows was made easier through power-sliding doors. A raised beltline was added over the rear wheels.
The interior offered seating for seven passengers with a pair of captain seats in the middle row. The 60/40 split-folding ratio of the seats provided a spacious cargo area.
The third-generation models were equipped with a 3.3-litre V6 engine, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It generated 280 hp.

The interior offered a dual 10-inch touchscreen display at the back of the front headrests. The displays featured screen mirroring and were a sound upgrade for the rear-seat passengers throughout the ride. Additionally, the display could also be connected to the Internet through a shared connection. Kia kept the same engine for the MPV, a 3.3-litre V6 engine.
KIA CARNIVAL FOURTH GENERATION (2021- PRESENT)
The fourth generation of the Kia Carnival was launched in 2021 but with a different approach. Kia designed the MPV inspired by the SUV design to keep up with the latest trends. It is currently available in four trim levels: LX, SX, EX, and SX Prestige.
The latest Carnival features two-box bodywork with low ground clearance. Rear sliding doors and raked forward C-pillars add to the robustness of the MPV’s design.
The Carnival still seats eight passengers in three rows. The middle seat can be removed to provide more cabin space and easier access to the third row. Apart from wider front seats, Kia has also equipped the Carnival with wood, metallic and leather trims for a dashboard. The centre stack is equipped with an infotainment system touch display. The fourth generation also features a range of connectivity features that improve the ride experience.
