Drifting is known for offering an impeccable combination of speed, precision and style, which garners the attention of motorsport enthusiasts worldwide. Primary sources contributing to this sport’s popularity include iconic events, cinematic franchises and online videos. With ample newcomers eager to learn the art of drifting, it is important to debunk the associated myths.
Myths about drifting often exaggerate its cost and complexity, discouraging aspiring drivers from pursuing this motorsport. Let’s take a look at some common misconceptions and the realities behind them to help you approach drifting with confidence.
Debunking Myths About Drifting
Drifting in the UAE is known for providing an adrenaline rush to both spectators and participants. Here are some of the prevalent misconceptions about drifting, along with practical advice to guide you on your journey:
Myth 1: Drifting Demands a Costly Car Investment
Drifting can become an expensive hobby at a higher level, but it is possible to get started without overspending. For beginners, some reliable cars include the Nissan 350Z, Mazda Miata or BMW 3-Series.
Prioritise essential upgrades rather than focusing on unnecessary modifications like intercoolers, bash bars or roof conversions. Tuning the suspension and ensuring the car is mechanically sound are some essential fundamentals to take care of. As your drifting skills grow, you can invest in performance upgrades when necessary. Manage your budget to avoid overspending early on.
Myth 2: You’ll Master Drifting on Day One
Drifting is among the skills that take considerable time to develop. While some individuals may show a natural aptitude, most beginners have to practice a lot in their early sessions. Taking time to learn drifting is completely normal as it involves controlling a car at high speeds in ways that defy typical driving practices.
Begin by focusing on foundational skills like first-gear donuts and figure eights. Upon improving, level up to second-gear moves and full-road courses. The key is to practice consistently and have patience, as even seasoned drivers experience plenty of failed attempts before achieving the perfect drift.
Myth 3: Front-Wheel-Drive Cars Can Drift
Front-wheel-drive (FWD) can slide; however, they are not built for drifting activities. To drift a car, the rear wheel should maintain power and slide control, aligning with the car’s momentum. FWD cars can start a power slide but lack the essential dynamic that helps in sustained drifting. A rear-wheel-drive (RWD) is an ideal choice for individuals who are passionate about drifting.
Myth 4: Automatic Transmission Vehicles Can’t Drift
Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to drift an automatic transmission vehicle. While manual cars are widely preferred for their exceptional control, modern automatics with paddle shifters or Tiptronic systems can also be modified for drifting. Mastering drifting in an automatic vehicle may take more practice and tweaks to your driving techniques. Using a handbrake for initiation and managing throttle inputs can help compensate for the lack of a manual clutch.
Myth 5: More Power Equals Better Drifting
One of the common drift myths is that more power is equal to better performance. For beginners or grassroots drivers, excessive power can make the car difficult to control, especially on smaller tracks. The ideal power range lies between 250 and 400 horsepower for learning and enjoying the experience.
