Car History: Chevrolet Camaro
Camaro is a popular model by Chevrolet, a division of General Motors, also classified as a “pony car”. Pony cars were first introduced in 1964 by Ford Mustang. The Camaro was launched in September 1966 with the 1967 model, clearly in competition with the Ford Mustang.
Today we will take an in-depth analysis of Chevrolet Camaro history and how its models evolved from generation to generation.
History of Chevrolet Camaro
In the 1960s, Ford launched its pony car, the Mustang. Not to be outdone, Chevrolet’s ace in the sleeve was the Camaro and to this day, Chevrolet and Ford are direct competitors in the automotive world.
The term pony car in the United States was made to designate compact sports cars, marketed at relatively affordable prices. However, the Camaro is considered the top of the mid-range sports models, which also included it in the muscle cars category.
The car shared the same GM F-Body platform design (a compact platform for rear-wheel-drive cars) and key components as the Pontiac Firebird, also produced in 1967. As a competitor to Ford Mustang, there are several editions of Camaro cars that came in the market such as standard, Rally Sports and Super Sports.
Below we have elaborated on the history of Camaro through the years and highlights of each of the Chevrolet Camaro generations, as well as the evolution of their engines:
First Generation Camaro: 1967-1969
The first Camaro can be considered the most acclaimed. The first generation of the model is also remembered for participation in the Indy 500, in 1967 and 1969, when a white Camaro convertible with orange stripes and interior was used as a pace car in the traditional race in Indianapolis.
The Camaro’s first generation was introduced as both coupe and convertible. In the entry versions, it had two configurations with the inline 6-cylinder, which had a horsepower ranging from 140 to 325 hp.
The most powerful models equipped with V8 ranged from 202 hp in the 4.9-litre versions to 380 hp in the 6.5-litre “big block” models. The COPO 9560 version boasted a 7.0-litre big block, which had between 430 and 435 horsepower.
Second Generation Camaro: 1970-1981
The second-generation Camaro lasted almost 11 years and was the most successful (in terms of sales) of the model, even amid the oil crisis in the 70s and stricter emissions controls, making the power of all models plummet.
One of the main changes of this second generation was the adoption of a wider body and a lower centre of gravity which culminated in better handling.
The second-generation Camaro suffered reductions in engine torque and power at the time of the oil crisis. It was equipped with an 8-cylinder V engine with only 157 hp.
Third Generation Camaro: 1982-1992
The third-generation Camaro was launched in 1982 and remained in line until 1992. At that time, a new architecture was introduced. One of the most striking differences was the reworked front suspension and a futuristic look for the time. With the 1982 Camaro Z28, the model won the Car of the Year award from Motor Trend magazine.
Marked by the introduction of new technologies, the third generation was the first Camaro to be equipped with four-cylinder engines. Between 1982 and 1986, the 2.5-litre engine produced 89 to 93 hp. The V6 and V8 versions also adopted electronic injection.
Later on, all the base models had a V6 engine with 2.8-litre and 102 horsepower that was further modified with a 5.0-litre V8 engine and 145 horsepower in 1987. Besides, the Z28 package had an optional fuel-injected 5.0-litre engine that came with 165 hp.
Fourth Generation Camaro: 1993-2002
When Chevrolet launched the fourth generation Camaro in 1993, it was not so successful. However, currently, it is increasingly valued thanks to the engine options it has.
The look brought elements of the predecessor but with much more rounded and aerodynamic lines, with a more inclined car windshield, as well as improvements in the chassis and more powerful thrusters.
In 1998, the front was retouched with new headlights and grille, coinciding with the introduction of the Corvette’s LS1-V8 engine. There are two versions, one with a V6 engine and the other with a V8 with 160 hp and 203 hp respectively. The version was sold until the year 2002.
Fifth Generation Camaro: 2010-2015
After an eight-year hiatus, the Camaro was reborn in style. This version had a retro appeal, with a larger hood and large headlights integrated into four rectangular-shaped taillights. Again, the Camaro rocked the entire car market in the world.
The fifth generation brought popularity back to the model, going on to sell over 500,000 units and surpass the Mustang for five straight years in sales. In the fifth incarnation the 1LE, Z/28 and ZL1 configurations were also produced.
In the fifth generation, the base Camaro had 304 hp in the version equipped with a V6; whereas, the six-speed manual Camaro SS was upgraded with a 6.2-litre V8 engine with 426 hp.
Also in 2012, the Camaro broke all power and torque records with the ZL1 configuration, which generated 588 hp with a V8 6.2 supercharger. If you wish to buy a used Chevrolet Camaro 2012 in the UAE can check out the listings here.
