1845 – DESIGN OF FIRST TYRES
In 1845, Robert William Thompson, a Scottish inventor, aspired to use rubber in vehicle tyres. He used a leather cover to wrap several leather tubes. He hoped the tubes would aid the wheel in rotating and also act as a shock absorber on the road. Thompson’s idea failed to see the light of day because of the limitations in the structure.
1888 – THE FIRST TYRES
Although Thompson’s idea failed to go into production, the design still laid the foundation for the first tyres. In 1888, a Scottish inventor and veterinarian, John Boyd Dunlop, used Thompson’s design to produce the first practical pneumatic tyres.
The metal tyres were fully covered with rubber shells and filled with air. In the same year, Karl Benz, introduced the first petrol car, ‘Benz Patent-Motorwagen’. The car used Dunlap’s tyres on its debut. In the years to come, Pneumatic tyres instantly became popular among the masses.

1905 – TYRE TREADS INTRODUCED

1920 – USE OF SYNTHETIC RUBBER IN TYRES
The popularity of pneumatic tyres saw several industries gear up and be a part of the revolution. Dupont, a well-known American company, industrialised synthesised rubber. The use of synthetic rubber was a major turning point in the history of car tyres.
1923 – BALLOON TYRES
In 1923, Firestone, An American tyre and rubber company, introduced the first production balloon tyres. In contrast to using solid rubber or pneumatic tyres, balloon tyres had an inflated tube inside the rugged outer tyre. Balloon tyres gave better handling than earlier tyres.
THE 1940s – TUBELESS TYRES
The rise in petrol prices called for fuel-efficient tyres. The front-wheel drive gained popularity during that era and tubeless tyres also helped increase fuel efficiency. The history of car tyres saw a rise in demand for tubeless tyres during that time.
1949 – RADIAL TYRES
The introduction of radial tyres was also a major point in the history of car tyres. The radial tyres had cords arranged around the edge of the wheel at a 90-degree angle. Arthur William Savage, a Jamaican businessman and inventor holds the privilege of patenting the design of radial tyres.
1970s to 1980s – TYRES BECOME SAFER
Run-flat tyres were introduced during the 1970s and became an instant sensation. These tyres were used for high speeding up to 80 kilometres per hour without needing a replacement. There were several other differences between run-flat tyres and normal tyres.
During the 1980s, Ultra-High-Performance(UHP) tyres were launched with about a 16-inches rim diameter. UHP tyres reinforced high-speed motion, braking power and better cornering.
THE 2000s – ECO-FRIENDLY TYRES
The growing concern for environmental sustainability not only led to the rise of electric cars but to eco-friendly tyres as well. Fuel-efficient features of the tyres lead to low emissions and contribute to the environment as a whole.
THE 2010s TO THE PRESENT – MODERN TYRES
As technological advancements and environmental awareness grew, manufacturers adhered to the need for modern tyres.
