All about Airless Tyres
For more than a century, the automotive industry depends upon pneumatic (rubber) tyres cushioned with air to roll-off vehicles. These tyres are considered fit for vehicles, but they are prone to damage and wear off after a period of time.
To resolve this, the idea of using non-pneumatic or airless tyres in cars was forwarded. These tyres are puncture-proof as it uses a solid metal core and metal spokes instead of air.
Let’s discuss airless car tyres, their working and benefits in more detail.
Design and Working of Airless Tyres
The creative car invention of puncture-proof tyre system has been here for a while. Previously, it was used in military vehicles and heavy machinery. For domestic vehicles, the concept was first unveiled by Michelin in 2005. Michelin’s airless tyre was named ‘Tweel’, the word is a combination of two words: tyre and wheel. Currently, the company is working with General Motors for testing of Tweel.
The design of airless tyres can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. However, the core design consists of an inner hub, rubber spokes and outer layer. The inner hub is a solid part of the tyre that is mounted over the car axle. This inner hub is attached to rubber spokes, a rib suspension system that provides the necessary cushion to the vehicle. Lastly, the outer layer is a rubber sheet that comes in contact with the surface. This sheet is similar to that used in any summer and winter tyres. This tyre sheet secures the tyre from wear and tear caused by rolling friction.
The rubber spokes of airless tyres are flexible and can be temporarily bent. When bent, the spokes absorb pressure, in the similar manner air pressure does in pneumatic tyres. The tyres can be manufactured with different spoke tensions, the greater the tension the better the handling. Along with this, the lateral stiffness can also be customised for better handling and ride comfort.
Benefits of Airless Tyres for Cars
The puncture-proof airless tyres are being considered as the future of tyres. There are a number of benefits that airless tyres will provide, we have listed some of them below.
No Spare Tyres
Unlike pneumatic tyres, airless tyres use rubber spokes that are not damaged from debris or potholes on the road. Therefore, these tyres are puncture-proof and exclude the concept of flat tyres completely. Since there are no flat tyres, the obligation of carrying a spare tyre can also be ignored.
Eco-Friendliness
The airless tyres require a lesser amount of raw material than pneumatic tyres for manufacturing. Moreover, the increased life span and durability of airless tyres will reduce the waste and delay the process of tyre recycling that positively contributes to the environment.
CO2 Emissions
The rolling friction in pneumatic tyres is responsible for a large portion of carbon emissions. On the contrary, airless tyres create less friction as the rubber spokes adjust according to the terrain. Therefore, airless tyres contribute to reducing carbon emissions from vehicles.
Future of Airless Tyres
There have been few major changes observed in the tyre technology since the tubeless tyres. Therefore, the concept of airless tyres is gaining rapid popularity. Almost all the major tyre manufacturers are working on this technology, but all of them are in the trial phase. It is estimated that by the end of this decade these tyres will be commercially available. However, there are a number of hurdles that need to be resolved prior to the launch of these tyres.
Till then, you can leverage these used tyres for sale in the UAE. This was all about the future and launch of airless tyres in the UAE. Regardless of the type, tyres play a crucial role in car handling and ride quality. Therefore, always ensure the tyre condition before buying a used car for sale in the UAE.
