Why Your Car Won’t Shift Out of Park
Automatic cars offer a host of features that make the riding experience easier. Most automatic gearboxes come with functions marked as P(park), R(reverse), N(neutral) and D(driving). When you move the gear to Park, it locks the transmission and prevents the wheels from rolling.
However, when you get behind the wheel and find your car stuck in park mode, it can be unnerving. To cater to this, we have gathered the reasons why your car won’t shift out of park and how to fix it.
What Causes the Gear Shift to be Stuck in Park
Several reasons such as car brake problems or transmission failure can cause the car to remain in Park mode. It can also be caused by intensified pressure on the parking pawl. That said we have noted the reasons that cause the gear shift to be stuck in Park.
High Pawl Pressure
If your car is stuck in park mode, check where it is parked. Parking the car on an inclined or uphill surface adds to the parking pawl pressure. Due to excessive tension, it gets wedged into the parking mode. It then becomes challenging to shift to Reverse or Drive mode.
To prevent this issue, make sure that the parking brake is set first when stopping on a steep incline. When you put on the parking brake before putting the transmission in Park, it shifts the weight on the brake assembly. As a result, the parking pawl wouldn’t endure much pressure.
Failed Brake Switch
For the shifter interlock to function appropriately, a working brake switch is important. When the brake switch is actuated, the system detects that the brake pedal is applied and the shifter is released.
However, the interlock function won’t work if the switch fails. It will not detect the actuation of the brake pedal. As a result, your car won’t shift out of park.
Transmission Failure
Due to the malfunctioning of a car transmission system, the vehicle may also get stuck in park mode. A faulty shifter solenoid or a transmission oil pan causes the car to be stuck in the P gear. Also, a transmission failure leads to other gear problems. For instance, your car would refuse to go into reverse if the transmission has worn out.
Faulty Shifter Interlock
The shifter interlock system in modern vehicles avoids the gear to be switched to Drive or Reverse mode. To do so, the brake pedal needs to be pressed. However, if the system fails, you won’t be able to disengage the car from park mode or the car won’t go into gear when running.
Malfunctioning Ignition Switch
A faulty car ignition system is another reason that causes the gear shift to get stuck in park mode. If the ignition switch is not working properly, it won’t send the signal to the shifter interlock, despite your car running. As a result, the shifter won’t be released and the car will be stuck in park mode.
How Do You Fix a Stuck Gear Shift in Park?
Although some problems such as the failure of transmission require professional assistance, there are some fixes that you can do yourself. These methods will help you in fixing a stuck gear in the Park:
Override Shift Interlock Solenoid
Most vehicles come with the option of overriding the shift interlock solenoid. The technique is said to be like hotwiring a car, however, it is a safety feature if your car gets stuck in park mode.
Here’s how you can override the shift interlock solenoid:
- Turn off the car and put on the parking brake.
- Insert the key into the ignition switch.
- Near your car shifter, you will notice a capped ‘gear shift lock’ cover.
- Remove the cover with a flat-head screwdriver and push it down in the slot.
- While doing so, press the brake pedal.
- Now grab the shifter and move it to Neutral mode.
- Remove the screwdriver and start the car. Push the brake pedal.
- You will now be able to drive away your car.
This is a short-term solution. However, it can be used temporarily while you can get professional assistance.
Inspect the Brake Lights
If the issue stems from the brake light switch, the brake lights won’t work properly. Also, the shifter interlock won’t receive a signal, making your car stuck in park mode. Apply the brakes and take the foot off the pedal multiple times. If you notice that the braking lights are not working, it is because of the faulty brake light switch.
Rework the Weight
If your car is not shifting out of Park mode while on a steep surface, the pressure on the parking pawl must be removed. Rock the car and try to move it out of Park mode by pressing the brake pedal and moving the shifter. As a result, some of the pressure will be alleviated from the pawl and you will hear a loud noise as the automatic transmission engages.
Apart from the above-mentioned solutions, it is advised to take your car to a professional mechanic. They will be able to diagnose and fix the problem that causes the gear shift to get stuck much more efficiently.
